Creston/O-M sophomore Jackson Kinsella led the Panthers at the prestigious Kansas City Stampede over the weekend, taking seventh place overall among 40 entries at 170 pounds. Kinsella went 5-3 over the course of two days of wrestling, including 2-1 in Friday’s pool competition with his only loss coming to an opponent from Goddard, Kansas, who is ranked fourth in the nation.

A Creston man was in disbelief after scratching off a $10,000 lottery prize. Shane Kerns won the eighth of 53 prizes of $10,000 available in the Iowa Lottery’s “Aces High” scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket at Casey’s, 301 W. Taylor St., in Creston on his way home from the gym and scratched it in the car.

Creston volleyball’s Megan Haley signed her letter of intent on Wednesday, confirming her intentions on playing volleyball at Des Moines Area Community College. Coming into her senior year, Haley’s future as an athlete at the collegiate level was uncertain.

Joann Moore and William Kunert are retiring from their positions at Iowa State Savings Bank (ISSB). For many years, Moore and Kunert dedicated their careers to meeting the financial needs of community members in southwest Iowa. ISSB CEO, Adam Snodgrass, said Moore and Kunert will be missed by their customers and co-workers.

16 years ago (2008)

Donations to the 2008 Union County Christmas Basket Fund totaling $20,190.45 have been received to date. This year’s fund goal is $17,000 and organizers are gearing up for another successful campaign.

Christmas Eve has arrived in Iowa with more snow from yet another storm. The National Weather Service said Wednesday morning that 1-3 inches of snow fell overnight in central and eastern Iowa, with isolated heavier amounts of 3-5 inches in the southeast.

If you’re looking to purchase a vehicle next year, you may want to bring extra money when getting it registered. Starting Jan. 1, registration fees will increase on newly purchased pickups and special trucks or those having a change in ownership or tonnage. Trucks under 3 tons and less than seven years old will see an $85 jump to $150 per year. ”People who purchase new trucks are going to be hit the most,” said Union County Treasurer Kelly Busch.

Creston hung tough with Atlantic through the first quarter during Hawkeye 10 girls basketball action Saturday. The Panthers trailed by only one point (8-7) after the first quarter, but the game wouldn’t stay close as Atlantic won 51-25.

26 years ago (1998)

Salary increases ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 for elected officials were recommended for elected officials were recommended to the Union County Board of Supervisors today by compensation board chairman Steve Maltzahn. Maltzahn said the board action recommends salary increases of $1,000 for the county auditor, recorder, treasurer and sheriff; $2,000 for the county attorney and $3,000 for county supervisors.

A bull elk seen wandering through Adair County the past month apparently met its demise in Union County. Remains of a bull elk believed to be about 4 years old and weighing 1,000 pounds were found Wednesday night in a ditch two miles west of Green Valley State Park, according to Mark Roberg, Department of Natural Resources conservation officer.

After losing the season opener, Creston’s boys basketball team has resurrected itself in a hurry, winning four straight. The Panthers latest victory was Denison-Schleswig on Friday night. Creston used a 21-2 second half run to bury the Monarchs 63-41.

High School soccer got a kick start from the Creston school board Monday. After meeting with local soccer supporters who are conducting a fund drive, the board unanimously voted to sanction a soccer program for the spring of 1999, with the stipulation start-up and operating costs will be covered by donations for two years.

36 years ago (1988)

Don Smith of Creston was elected chairman of the Union County Compensation Board at its reorganizational meeting Friday. Francis White was elected vice chairman and Jack Kueter was elected secretary according to the board minutes.

Richard Byerly, president/superintendent of Southwestern Community College, has been appointed chairman of the community college presidents’ legislative committee. The committee is responsible for developing the state’s community college legislative program in cooperation with the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees.

With all the bodies crashing to the floor and sporadic fits of sloppy ball control, Creston’s boys probably won’t be awarded any prizes for tidiness in Friday’s Hawkeye Eight contest. However, the Panthers opened a lead in the second half, widened the gap steadily and then wrapped up the Lewis Central Titans rather neatly down the stretch for a 67-56 win.
