Throwback Thursday: Student-run retail store on track to open 5 years ago

Exalted Ruler Samantha Krantz from Creston Elks Lodge No. 605 was recently honored at the Iowa Elks Association Fall State convention in Des Moines on Nov. 1 and 2, 2019. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Grand Exalted Ruler Robert L. Duitsman and First Lady Beth, from Culver, California, Lodge No. 1917, were in attendance.

The IGCA released its all-state and all-district volleyball teams for the 2019 season with several area girls selected across both all-state and all-district. In Class 3A, Kelsey Fields was selected to the all-West district team. She’s the lone representative of Creston in 3A. In Class 2A, Nodaway Valley’s Corinne Bond and Natalie Yonker were selected to the all-Southwest district team. For Class 1A, the all-South Central district contained Murray’s Kinzee Eggers and Orient-Macksburg’s Kaela Eslinger.

What began as an idea pitched by Stephanie Lane – a technology integrationist at Green Hills AEA – will be brought to life Monday through the effort of students of Creston Community High School’s Communication and Services Technology program. On Nov. 30, “The Crossing” – a student-run retail store – will open its doors. The executive team – comprised of Sydney Pantini, president; Brodie Wallace, vice president; Cole Strider, treasurer; Anna Mikkelson, secretary and Rylie Driskell – are coordinating what will be available for purchase at The Crossing.

10 years ago (2014)

The Iowa Newspaper Association released its 2014 football all-state teams Tuesday, and they included six area players on the Class A teams — four from Mount Ayr and two from Nodaway Valley. Senior Joe Ricker becomes the first player in Mount Ayr history to be named a first-teamer three times, as he earned first-team recognition on the defensive line. Joining Ricker on the first team defense is senior linebacker Riley Weehler. Senior Tucker Winemiller earned a first-team nod on the offensive line, while Ricker’s twin brother Jake received third-team honors on the offensive line. Nodaway Valley’s representatives were junior Jackson Lamb as a defensive back on the second team and senior Tanner Armstrong on the third-team defensive line.

Creston’s new defensive weapon — placing athletic 5-10 senior Natalie Mostek at the top of a 1-2-2 three-quarters court press — made life miserable early for the injury-plagued Mount Ayr girls Tuesday night. A 22-3 start, fueled by layups off steals in the pressure defense, keyed Creston’s 64-40 victory over Mount Ayr in the championship game of the Raiderette Tip-Off Classic.

15 years ago (2009)

Thanksgiving may be over, but the hunt for turkeys is still on, bowling style, that is. Returning for the Creston girl’s bowling squad are four bowlers with varsity experience. Taylor Hance will be the anchor for the varsity squad after consistent time on last year’s varsity team that included graduates Kayla Davidson, Dana Howe and Aubrey Pendegraft. The Panthers posted an all-time high score of 2,595 and built a record of 22-3, winning the regional meet to qualify for state.

Walking into Aunt Fannie’s Department of Nifty Stuff is like taking a walk back in time. There are old stoves, wash boards, ice skates, soda-pop bottles with old logos and Creston school letter sweaters everywhere. Aunt Fannie’s, 222 N. Maple St., is an antique and collectibles store that is an addition to Maple Street Memories. Opening day was Friday.

The 2009 Union County Christmas Basket Fund has started receiving gifts. Donations totaling $1,532 have been received to date. Highlighting recent donations is $250 from Creston Lions Club. The Christmas Basket Fund was organized more than 50 years ago to provide holiday food baskets to Union County’s needy families and individuals. This year’s fund goal is $18,000 and organizers are gearing up for another successful campaign.

20 years ago (2004)

For these three seniors -- Creston/Orient-Macksburg’s Jim Ide, Nodaway Valley’s Billy Baudler and Mount Ayr’s Dustin Larsen -- the 2004 season was capped today with another honor to their already loaded resumes. Ide, Baudler and Larsen were named to the Iowa Newspaper Association’s 2004 all-state football team. Ide was named to the Class 3A second team as a tight end. Baudler was named to the Class 2A first team as a linebacker. Larsen was named to the Class 1A third team as a wide receiver.

Mount Ayr will face East Union in the final of the East Union Tourney tonight at 8 p.m. The Eagles defeated Orient-Macksburg 67-29 Monday night, while Mount Ayr defeated Diagonal 35-26. Mount Ayr and Diagonal played the tournament’s first game. Both teams struggled from the field, with the Raiders shooting 25%, while the Maroonettes shot 20%.
