Influenced by his faith, family and friends, Avery Fuller has found his calling serving his community, both at Creston Community High School and beyond its walls. Because of his selflessness, can-do attitude and on-going community involvement, Fuller has earned the 2021 Creston Chamber of Commerce’s Youth of the Year award.
Steve Francis is the kind of person who can make something old look new again. Well, sort of. A member of the Union County Historical Society, Francis has been involved in the renovation of various projects which made him the 2021 recipient of the Creston Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year.
Dick Anderson was awarded Citizen of the Year by the Creston Chamber of Commerce. The humble Anderson was grateful to receive the award as community service comes naturally to him. Anderson moved to Creston in 1984 and was the senior lending officer for commercial loans at various banks until his retirement. He moved to Creston for a job opportunity and since then he has been involved in various committees, such as the Chamber of Commerce, where he has previously been on the nominating committee for Citizen of The Year.

The resignation of Union County Clerk of Court Melynda Crawford became effective Oct. 27. “Melynda resigned for her own reasons, none of which were shared with us,” said Allison Danilovich, a judicial clerk for Union County. Crawford had been the clerk of court in Union County since March 8. She was hired to replace Marsha Parsons, who retired after holding the position since January 1989. The acting interim clerk of court is Stacey Armstrong from Adair County.
The playground at East Union’s new $7.25 million elementary building is not totally complete by today’s Nov. 4 contingency date, but weather continues to cooperate for the West Des Moines construction service in charge of the project. On Oct. 25, the East Union school board requested Construction Service Inc. (CSI) of West Des Moines complete two on-site projects before winter weather arrives.
Sharon (Ridnour) Pinske stood inside her new room in The Iowana Tuesday morning and gazed out at Uptown Creston. “So many memories,” she said quietly. Sharon and her brother Bob Ridnour are the first people who began the moving-in process at The Iowana Tuesday morning. Tuesday was the first day occupants of The Iowana could move into the restored former hotel building.

“It’s the little things in life that make a difference,” according to Kelsey Hoakison Creston FFA Chapter officer. The Creston FFA Chapter has implemented this philosophy in their local chapter program of activities which has consistently been recognized nationally in community development. The chapter will again be working with Y-teens, CHS Big Sister/Little Sister and CHS Student Government in assisting Creston seniors who need yard work done in November.
Southwestern Community College took an easy 30-22, 30-25, 30-18 win over Des Moines Area Community College Tuesday night to get a third seed in this weekend’s regional tournament.
One FFA member became a member of an elite club when she was named a national finalist in the National FFA Proficiency Award Competition. Jill Tussey, 19, of Creston became only the sixth member in the history of the Creston FFA Chapter to earn such recognition.

The assessment is universal – this storm is a doozy. Officials with area utilities and the city of Creston have changed their assessment of the powerful ice storm that sacked Creston beginning Thursday. At first, the feeling was the March 1990 ice storm was worse. Not anymore. The temperature began falling shortly after dawn this morning and the winds picked up. Iowa Southern Utilities estimated that up to 2,000 customers have been without power at some point.
Representing the Creston girls cross country team at the state meet to be held Tuesday in Ames are Kim Callahan and Benjle Wimmer, Shelly Morrison, Katja Herlach and Nathalle Binetruy. The Pantherettes qualified by placing fourth in the Class 2A district team meet in Atlantic.
The name has been changed but the faces remain the same today with the opening of First Federal Savings Bank of Creston. The Corning-based Whitmore Company, Inc., was awarded the bid from the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) to acquire the assets and assume the deposits of the former First Federal Savings and Loan Association in Creston. The announcement was made Friday afternoon.
