Green Valley road closes today

Union County Secondary Roads Superintendent Al Hysell told the county board of supervisors Monday Green Valley Lake Road will be closed starting today because of work on the bridge. The bridge is north of the intersection with 150th.

The county expects the road to be closed for four to six months. Traffic will be detoured.

The county’s TIF budget will help pay for the work which are property tax revenues from wind turbines in the area.

Supervisors listened to a presentation from Ann Smisek, representing Ahler and Cooney about handling the county’s human resources. The county is reviewing presentations from other firms that handle all employment issues. Supervisors have said they are only reviewing other firms and not implying problems with the existing provider.

Supervisors did not take any action.

Based in Des Moines, Smisek said she has 10 years of experience with labor and employment law and has extensive experience with city and county governments and school districts. She also has worked with public employee unions. She said Ahler and Cooney have worked with more than half of Iowa’s 99 counties. The law firm has multiple employees handling employment issues with their clients as all the work would not be done by Smisek.

She said their flat fee is $1,500 a month plus mileage for meetings.
