Throwback Thursday

Pat Wallace of Creston and his 1946 Chevy pickup both had roles recently in the movie "Bridges of Madison County" currently filming in Winterset. Wallace's truck won a role first, then Wallace was pegged as an extra for a day-long session with the film's leading man, Clint Eastwood.

10 years ago (2014)

As the national and gubernatorial races grab a lot of attention for television ads and time in the state and national spotlight, the Creston News Advertiser coverage area has several competitive races on the local level. Union County has one competitive race this election season for a seat on the Board of Supervisors. Incumbent Ron Riley is seeking reelection against Democrat challenger Paul Hayes.

It’s a big game Friday at Harlan’s renovated Merrill Field for both Creston/Orient-Macksburg and the Cyclones. But, the tables are turned from many past years in terms of the ramifications. This time, Creston/O-M is the favored team, having received state ratings votes in Class 3A, with a chance to face co-leader Dallas Center-Grimes next week for outright first place in Class 3A District 8.

The Creston volleyball team celebrated senior night in a big way here Tuesday, sweeping state-ranked Shenandoah 25-17, 25-16, 25-23. The Panthers, ranked 13th in Class 4A, played much sharper than in a 3-1 loss one week earlier to fellow 4A ranked conference rival Lewis Central. Shenandoah, 18-9 and ranked 15th in Class 3A, never really recovered from Creston’s early 12-4 lead in the first set.

20 years ago (2004)

Creston’s new police chief was welcomed to the community with a reception held before Tuesday’s city council meeting. Then the council denied his first request. A proposed ban of skateboards in the Creston business district has proved to be a controversial issue.

Creston/Orient-Macksburg head coach Dick Bergstrom knew the 2004 team had the tools to be a successful team. Standing at 2-3 and 0-3 in District 8, the Panthers have abandoned their playoff dreams, focusing on adding to a 17-year-old streak of winning seasons. Although both Creston/O-M and Glenwood enter Friday’s game 0-3 in District 8, Bergstrom believes the Panthers’ experience puts them at an advantage.

East Union and Mount Ayr hooked up in a Pride of Iowa Conference volleyball battle that went down to the wire Tuesday, as the host Eagles came out on top 16-14 in game five.

30 years ago (1994)

On Wednesday, approximately 1,000 rural Union County residents will receive new address notification letters from Main Street Planning Inc. in cooperation with the South Central Iowa 911 Service Board and Union County. More than 90% of rural residents will receive such notification letters in preparation for the E911 system scheduled to begin next summer.

Hy Bunn, president and CEO of Bunn-O-Matic was present for a special celebration held at the Creston plant. Bunn began training in a quality control program 18 months ago, which culminated in “Zero Defects Day” Friday. The celebration allowed Bunn employees the opportunity to gain recognition for their successes and to reaffirm their commitment to the quality process. More than 7,000 hours of training has been completed at the Creston plant.

Two area high school marching bands swept honors in the both street and field competition during the annual Clarinda Band Jamboree held Saturday. Creston High School’s marching band won first place in Class 3A field and parade. The Lenox Community High School marching band took first place honors in Class 1A field and parade competition.

Creston/O-M nose tackle Gabe Looney summed up the Panthers’ game with Norwalk Friday best. “It was a nail-biter wasn’t it,” the senior said tongue-in-cheek. The eighth-ranked Panthers rolled past Norwalk 45-0, scoring touchdowns on the first five possessions.

40 years ago (1984)

The Creston Rotary Club presented checks to Ruby Stevens, chairman of Food for Life, and Pat Bartley with the Union County Food Pantry for MATURA at their regular meeting Monday. Each were given $125 with the money coming from the sale of potato chips during Balloon Days.

A 5-year old Creston boy sent authorities and relatives into a search Tuesday morning, but turned up safe. The boy was found under the front porch of his house about 45 minutes after he was reported missing.

The issue of whether Creston School District voters should approve bonds to finance the construction of a new high school and increase their taxes to improve two elementary schools is starting to heat up. A group calling itself Concerned Property Taxpayers of the Creston Community School District have come forth to express opposition. To date, only supporters of the four propositions that will be on next Tuesday’s ballot have publicly expressed their views.
