The legendary toughness of Northwest Missouri State senior Collin Bevins has been, and will continue to be, the hub of the Bearcat defense. The Creston High School graduate has generated excitement noteworthy to NFL scouts across the country. The defensive end’s gritty attitude and tenacious pursuit was established in a small town of less than 8,000 where his athletic career ended with not a football, but a wrestling state championship around his waist. Since then, Bevins has been rewarded with national titles as a Bearcat in 2013 and 2015.

Dr. Scott Shuey was recognized as Iowa Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA) Veterinarian of the Year by IVMA President Dr. Jennifer Schleining at the Sept. 9 annual meeting in Ames.

The Creston Park and Recreation board recently submitted a grant application to receive up to $10,000 from The Wellmark Foundation. The board is looking to install new playground equipment in Taylor Park. The project will happen with or without the grant, but will be completed sooner than planned if the Creston Park and Recreation board receives the grant.

A bit more banged up than they might like to be, the Creston/Orient-Macksburg Panthers (6-0, 4-0) came away with an emphatic 48-7 road win over rival Winterset (1-5, 1-3) Friday.

Crest Baptist Church launches its second “40 Days of Purpose” campaign Oct. 15. At the center of the campaign is the best-selling hardback book in American history, according to Publisher’s Weekly. “The Purpose Driven Life” has sold more than 30 million copies. During the “40 Days of Purpose” campaign, the truths about God’s five purposes for people -- worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry and evangelism -- will be communicated.

Administrators of Greater Regional Medical Center continue efforts to make progressive medical care available to area residents at the Creston hospital. During Monday’s hospital board of trustees meeting, that goal was once again reinforced when the lease option of a new $935,043 CT scanner was approved.

Corning’s Todd Wolf and Tabitha Shepherd took individual titles at the Clarke Invitational on Tuesday. Wolf won the 5K on the boys side with a time of 17:52, his first individual title of the season, while Shepherd took home her third individual win of the season in the girls 4K with a time of 14:46. Sara Wolf was eighth for the Lady Raiders with a time of 16:22.

28 years ago (1996)

LuAnne Brown of Corning was one of eight regional finalists for the 1996 Outstanding Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner award presented during the 50th annual meeting for Iowa Soil and Water District Commissioners in Des Moines. During the annual meeting Ed Hansen of Orient was presented the Iowa Soil Conservation Awards Program teaching award for grades seven through 12.

Creston won its final home volleyball match of the year and moved up in the Hawkeye 10 standings in the process. The Pantherettes improved to 5-2 in the league with a 10-15, 15-7, 15-12, 15-12 triumph over Carroll Kuemper.

A settlement has reportedly been reached with the bonding company for Main Street Planning, the company that went bankrupt while completing the master address database for the regional E911 system in Union and six other counties. The agreement will allow funding for a St. Louis, Missouri, company to begin corrections and completion of the addressing data in six of the counties.

The deer are breeding like rabbits in Ringgold County. Just how to correct the exploding deer population in Ringgold and other southern Iowa counties was the topic of plenty of discussion Wednesday at the Ringgold County Courthouse. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has proposed an extra antlerless deer season, Jan.11-19, in 12 southern Iowa counties to reduce the deer population to what it was in the 1980s. If approved by the DNR Commission, proposed counties will include Clarke, Ringgold, Taylor, Union and Adams.

38 years ago (1986)

A ladies “Fall-Get Away From it All” night will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16, at Bernings Cafe and the Strand Theatre. The annual event, sponsored by the Creston Chamber of Commerce Women’s Committee will feature entertainment by humanist Cathie Fife.

Bedford moved up a notch to No 1 in Class B on this week’s southwest Iowa football ratings compiled by the Omaha World Herald. The 4-0 Bulldogs have scored 161 points and allowed 21.
