Throwback Thursday – Sept. 5, 2024

7 years ago (2017)

New electronic voting machines will be made available for Tuesday’s school board elections at all five Union County precincts. They have been purchased by the Union County Auditor’s office, and will be used in all future elections in Union County.

East Union scored 30 points in the first quarter on its way to a 60-0 win over Murray during Friday evening’s homecoming game. Matthew Wittstock took the opening kickoff back 70 yards for a touchdown, getting the Eagles into a groove early.

The Creston volleyball team had to fight and claw for a 25-23, 22-25, 25-11, 28-26 win over Southwest Valley Thursday night in the team’s home opener. The final game was indicative of the whole night, as the two teams went back and forth with neither wanting to give an inch.

The Creston girls cross country team finished with four individual medalists and placed second as a team Thursday night at Greene County’s cross country meet held at Spring Lake Park. Denison-Schleswig won the girls team title with 24 points, placing all five scorers in the top eight. Creston finished second with 61 points, five points ahead of Winterset.

17 years ago (2007)

The final night of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action is over and a period has been put at the end of the 2007 season. Feature winners were Chris Spieker, Dan Mueller, Mike Garner and Brad Bergren. The 2007 track champions are Spieker, Jeremy Tibben, Garner and Matt Hudson.

This week, Creston/O-M held on with a lead late in the ballgame. The Winterset Huskies haven’t beat the Panthers since 1983, and that taste of victory will have to wait another year as a late comeback gave Creston/Orient-Macksburg a 20-16 victory Friday night at McGaffin Field.

Creston had six medalists in the Jefferson-Scranton Invitational Thursday afternoon. This was the first team competition of the season for the Panthers, as meets at Urbandale and Winterset were conducted as grade-level meets. Both Panther squads placed sixth in the seven-team Class AA fields Thursday.

Two candidates will be on the ballot Tuesday for election to Creston School Board for a three-year term. Incumbent Bob Deranleau is challenged by Kevin Downey.

27 years ago (1997)

Creston and Nodaway Valley cross country teams gained valuable early season experience running against some top central Iowa teams Thursday in the Urbandale Invitational. Creston finished 14th in both the girls and boys standings. Nodaway Valley placed sixth among 17 girls teams and 10th in the 15-team boys competition.

Don’t forger about the major rule change when attending tonight’s season opener football games. The IHSAA is experimenting with a new rule that states if a player steps out of bounds, the clock will only stop momentarily until the referee spots the ball for play. Previously, the clock was stopped until the ball was snapped. The rule is only being used in Iowa and only on a trial basis.

Mary Ann Walsh and Alice Gardner, both of Creston, were among more than 500 current and former volunteers recognized at the Iowa State Fair for 25 years or more service to Iowa 4-H.

Union County Emergency Management Coordinator Roger Nurnberg presented a budget update at the agency’s Aug. 25 meeting and reported a shortfall of $3,850 in matching funds for a state grant and $3,027 in directors and operations insurance premium.

37 years ago (1987)

Creston’s City Council seats and other offices are open for election Nov. 3, but so far no one has taken out nomination papers. City Clerk Donna Wolfe said seven council seats are up for re-election this fall along with the mayor’s and two park board seats. The deadline to file is Sept. 24.

The Creston Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors held ribbon-cutting ceremonies at the new Super Car Wash, located on Highway 34 East next to Hi-Crest used cars.

Tammera Taylor Denton of Creston and Wendi Campbell of Orient will be awarded diplomas from the American Institute of Business Sunday, Sept. 13 at the Des Moines Civic Center. Denton will receive an associate of business degree with a computer programming and accounting major. Campbell will receive a secretarial diploma.

First Baptist Church in Lorimor will celebrate its 100th anniversary at a special worship service Sunday. The church held its first service 100 years ago, shortly after Lorimor was incorporated. Lorimor celebrated its centennial in May.
