From Maple to Montgomery

Papusas are made to sell at Fiesta on Maple. To sell food in Creston parks, food trucks and stands would have to be invited by event coordinators.

With North Maple Street under water main construction, the third annual Fiesta on Maple has moved to 300 and 400 blocks of Montgomery Street. Despite this, the event promises to be just as exciting. The fiesta will begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The annual event, which began in 2022, has helped give a space in Creston to celebrate Hispanic heritage. Dances, food and a mechanical bull have featured in past events. Vendors will be available, providing food, drinks and handcrafted goods. Expect tamales, pupusas and other Hispanic food to delight.

This year, the event will be beating the fall chill with an earlier date in the calendar. The previous two events were held in October. Sunny midday weather and a high temperature in the low 80s will give a different feeling to the event.

Similar annual events that utilize Maple Street, such as Market on Maple, offer a chance to celebrate and bring together local businesses. With Fiesta on Maple, the event will help celebrate diverse local culture and heritage. A tapestry of different parts of Hispanic culture will be available to learn and celebrate for all ages.

Violins, trumpets, and guitars will sound across Montgomery to open the day. At 11 a.m., a live mariachi band will kick off a day full of unique sounds with a Mexican flair.

Starting at 12:15 p.m., the Danza Guadalupana will take place, bringing Aztec-style dances to Montgomery. Brightly colored costumes with head dresses help give authenticity to the traditional dance.

Son Peruchos will return from last year’s event for another round of music, beginning a two hour set at 1 p.m. The band speaks both Spanish and English.

A piñata breaking will take place at 3 p.m., triggering the final hour of events. The Jovenes Embajadores, a group performing folkloric Mexican dances, will close out a day full of cultural performances from 3:15 to 4 p.m.

Additional activities will be available throughout the event. The mechanical bull will return, offering those to saddle up and challenge the toro. Face painting, art stations and bounce houses will also be available for kids.
