Green Valley Road bridge to be repaired

Union County Board of Supervisors scheduled a bid approval for Sept. 23 for what is known as the Green Valley Lake Road bridge, north of 150th.

Union County Engineer Christian Boehemer said Monday he expects the road to be closed for four to six months for the work. Traffic will be detoured. He did not know a work schedule but said it’s possible the construction crew could begin work this fall and work into winter, depending upon weather conditions.

Engineer estimates for the work are $820,000 and the county’s TIF budget is expected to help pay. Those are the property tax revenues from wind turbines in the area.

County officials have scheduled a township trustee appreciation event. The dinner and speaker will be held Sept. 12 at the small animal building at the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton. Spouses of trustees are invited. A catered meal will be served at 5:30 p.m. followed by a speaker at about 6:30 p.m. Items expected to be discussed are township budgets and property liability issues. According to county records, there are 36 trustees and 12 clerks.

In a related matter, supervisors approved to have a question on the Nov. 5 ballot. The question will ask Pleasant Township voters to allow the supervisors to appoint clerk and trustees when needed. Existing township officials will remain in the positions until they decide to resign. County officials hope those who do resign will have a suggestion on who to replace them. Pleasant Township is south of Thayer.
