The new school year brings with it a new cell phone policy at Creston Community Middle School. According to the CCMS handbook, cell phones are to be turned off and stored in lockers 8:05 a.m. to 3:25 p.m. All other electronic devices brought to school must also be kept in lockers during the school day.
After a 10-15 season a year ago, Creston volleyball hopes its three seniors and a team infused with young talent can make a mark on the Hawkeye 10 conference this year. Co-head coaches Mallory Peterson and Naomi Sharp know that the Panthers will have to manufacture some offense with girls that will need to be more prominent after being role players last year. After a scrimmage and a clinic, Peterson thinks the rotation is narrowed down and ready for the season opener.
In rural Union County, one farmer is proving he cares about conservation by continually implementing innovative practices to protect Iowa’s water quality and prevent soil erosion. Because of this, Chad Ide, 35, of Shannon City, is the 2018 recipient of the Iowa Conservation Farmer of the Year Award.

Creston’s Kaleb Evans was named The World Herald’s choice as western Iowa male athlete of the year for 2007-08 released today. Evans was a four-time all-stater in baseball, a two-time state wrestling champion and two-time all-stater in football at Lenox and later at Creston.
They came to the Beijing Olympics as a team trying to find its way, still adjusting to a new coach and each other, still smarting from a loss that brought humiliation on and off the field. On Thursday night, the U.S. women’s soccer team stood as one. Olympic gold medals around their necks, champions once again.
The annual Football Kickoff Cookout, held Saturday at Crestmoor Golf Club, netted nearly $11,000 for all levels of the Creston/O-M program, including meals for players on road trips, youth flag football and camps.
Despite delays, Greater Regional Medical Center’s construction project soldiers on. Although the front entrance/registration, rehabilitation department and emergency portions of the project are slated to be completed by the end of the year, it’ll be a bit longer before the total project sees completion.

Approximately 1,800 attended two shows performed by the Culpepper & Merriweather circus Thursday in Creston. Proceeds from the shows benefited the 10,000 Crestonians fireworks fund for the year 2000. Organizers said close to $2,000 will be given to the fund.
Officials from the Publishers Clearing House sweepstakes knocked on the rectory door Thursday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling and told the Rev. Mike Berner he’d won $1 million. Berner, 38, was the associate pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Creston and St. Edward in Afton from July 1986 to June 1989 and was one of the founders of the St. Malachy School Foundation.
Tom and Kathy Eagan of Creston didn’t expect to ever have children. Then they were told they were going to have three babies all at once. Tom, 37, and Kathy, 38, had nearly given up hope of conceiving after trying in vitro fertilization twice. In November, they decided to try one more time and transferred three embryos. June 9 marked the arrival of Samual Dale, Maxwell Phillip and Grace Elizabeth.
Union County took a step toward offering a daily driver’s license station Monday as county officials approved a 28E agreement with the state. The agreement with the Iowa Department of Transportation establishes a daily driver’s license station in the Union County Treasurer’s Office January 2000.

“Not bad” was the grade from head coach Dick Bergstrom on Creston’s first 11-on-11 organized scrimmage Saturday morning at the junior high field. Thirty-eight players from the 42-member varsity (juniors and seniors) were available for the scrimmage that concluded around 10 a.m. under increasingly steamy conditions.
State officials, representatives from Southwestern Community College in Creston and local economic development promoters were pleased Monday with an announcement from Iowa Lottery. The college will receive a $117,000 grant from lottery funds to establish a new Agriculture Revitalization Program.
The Society of Distinguished American High School Students announced today four students from the Creston First Presbyterian Church have been selected as members in its honor society for 1988. Those selected were Steve Lorimor, Terry and John Brentnall and Jenni Shallenberger.
