12 years ago (2012)

Because of the current drought conditions, some counties and communities are asking their residents to conserve and ration their water. Currently, that is not the case in Creston and surrounding counties.

Things got so heated during a special board meeting of Creston School Board Thursday afternoon, a fight almost became physical in the parking lot after the meeting adjourned. The board approved 4-1, the resignation of Creston Superintendent Tim Hood during the meeting, which was attended by approximately 25 people. Rich Flynn was the only board member who voted no.

The machinelike swimmer, U.S. Olympian Michael Phelps, seemed to run on motor rather than muscle and scooped up medals by the handful, one whose less-than-golden perfection made the victories that much sweeter when they came as they did on Tuesday night. ”This has been an amazing ride,” Phelps said almost pensively Tuesday night, when he won the 19th medal that made him the most decorated Olympic athlete ever.

22 years ago (2002)

Creston Mayor Larry Flynn proclaims Aug. 1-7 as “World Breastfeeding Week” in the city of Creston. The proclamation adds “Whereas, breastfeeding is a natural, healthy way for mothers and infants to bond and; Whereas, each part of the community has a vital role to play and benefits to gain by supporting, promoting and protecting breastfeeding.”

Megan Birchard and Zach Leith, students at Irving Elementary School in Creston, attended the 2002 Iowa Starbase Leadership Conference July 7 through 12 at Camp Dodge in Johnston. Students who attended ISLC were selected by their school counselors and teachers for their leadership abilities and potential.

Jennifer Peterson of Shannon City, formerly of Creston, was presented a $3,000 National Federation of the Blind (NFB) scholarship at the July 8 NFB banquet in Louisville, Kentucky. Peterson will be a second-year graduate student in social work at the University of Iowa.

Grand Marshals for Pumpkin Day held July 20 in Orient were Earl and Colleen Vandewater.

Kylee Bradley’s outstanding senior season was rewarded by representing the Creston softball squad on the second team of the Hawkeye 10 All-Conference selections announced today. Another Panther senior, pitcher Erin Hudek, received honorable mention.

32 years ago (1992)

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin arrived in Creston on Saturday to tour the Three Mile Reservoir site. Harkin is committed to the project. “It’s going to happen,” Harkin said Saturday morning.

Rudy Ehm of Creston has been selected to chair Sen. Chuck Grassley’s 1992 reelection campaign in Union County. “The work Rudy has done at state and local levels has proven his abilities and I’m pleased to welcome him aboard,” Grassley said.

The team of Chad Chase, Terry Horinng, Scott Howarth and Dick May shot a 17-under-par 47 to win Saturday’s Creston Elks Clown Variety Club four-person best ball tournament at the Pine Valley course. The foursome of Tim Hartsock, Ken Stults, Dan Coen and Bryan Mostek finished just two strokes back in the 18-hole competition.

Area residents watching the “Tonight Show” hosted by Jay Leno Monday night will be able to see Creston High School graduate Julee Cruise perform as a member of the pop band the B-52s. Cruise was asked to join the group while she was performing in the off-broadway rock n’roll musical “Return to the Forbidden Planet” in New York.

42 years ago (1982)

Whether Creston’s last neighborhood grocery store will reopen is unsure since owner Emett McCoy could not be reached today. Fire destroyed the building which was also his residence at 309 S. Birch St. Creston Firemen were called to the fire early Saturday at about 4 a.m.

Extended Area Service between Creston and Kent begins Wednesday according to R.T. Willis General Telephone district manager at Creston. The new EAS service will handle telephone service between the two communities as local calling, eliminating long distance charges.

The Lenox Rodeo Queen was announced prior to the start of the rodeo its opening night Friday. Angie Pickering of Mount Ayr was named queen and will compete at the Iowa State Fair Cowgirl Queen contest in Des Moines.

In what could become an annual event, Wellman Dynamics held a highly successful picnic Sunday at McKinley Park with 425 employees and family members attending.

There will be a bicycle ride from Creston to Orient and back Saturday to commemorate the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Beginning at 8:30 a.m. from McKinley Park, the ride is presented by the Creston Ministerial Alliance. Rest stops are to be designated along the route and speakers will be at each to give information on the nuclear weapons issue.

A Creston man, for whom a fund was started Tuesday to help him recover loses from a Saturday fire, has asked that the fund be transferred to the Southside Boosters. Emett McCoy said he appreciated the concern of his neighbors who started the fund but that he thought the money would be better spent if it went to a charity, like the Southside Boosters, for future projects.
