Nomination forms for seats open

Those wanting to run for federal and certain seats within Union County must have their nomination forms submitted by late August depending upon the seat.

Greater Regional Health board of directors has one seat on the Nov. 5 ballot. Julie Lanning’s term expires this year. The board is converting from a seven-member board to a five-member board. Member Sherry McKie, whose term also expires this year, is not running for re-election. Earlier this week the board approved to rewrite its bylaws to reflect five members and eliminate a seat that has been vacant since December 2022.

Candidates for Union County Iowa Agriculture Extension and soil and water entities are also on the ballot. Candidate information is needed by 5 p.m. Aug. 28.

Candidates for Iowa’s representative in the U.S. House can circulate a petition beginning July 29. Forms must be submitted by 5 p.m., Aug. 24 to the Iowa Secretary of State. Candidates will be on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Republican incumbent Zach Nunn is a candidate for U.S Rep. District 3 which includes Union County. Lannon Baccam is the Democrat candidate. Candidates must be a resident of Iowa at the time of election and at least 25 years old. The term is for two years. Candidates needs 1,726 signatures; at least 47 from each of the counties in the district.

In a related issue, Republican incumbent Amy Sinclair and Democrat candidate Nicole Loew are running for State Senate Dist. 12. That includes eastern and northern portions of Union County.

Republican incumbent Devon Wood is the lone candidate for State Rep. Dist. 17 which includes Union County and Creston.

Incumbent Republican Ray Sorensen of Greenfield is running against Democrat Karen Varley of Stuart for State Rep. Dist. 23 which includes eastern and northern portions of Union County.
