100th Union County Fair begins Thursday

The 100th version of the Union County Fair begins Thursday at the fairgrounds in Afton with a blend of traditional events and those recognizing the century mark for the event.

At 6 p.m. Thursday will be a a Royal Reunion; a recognition of all former Union County Fair Queens at The Queen Coronation. After the event, live music will be from Tyler Folkerts at The Grand Pavilion.

Starting 10 a.m. Friday, Plein Air is at the fair. Participants are invited to help paint a piece of history to help celebrate the 100th year of the fair.

The 4th Annual UC Buddies Show will be held in the ISSB Arena 4 p.m. Friday If a little one would like some hands-on experience in the show ring, this will provide them an opportunity learn what it is all about.

More anniversary celebrating is at 7 p.m. Friday. Join members of the fair board for a Century Celebration before kicking off the free concert featuring TOAST3R! After that, the crowd is invited to stay for the fireworks show put on by Top Notch Fireworks.

The third annual Baby Contest is at 10 a.m. Saturday. Participants may win one of the many titles. Registration opens at 9 a.m. at the GRH Information Booth.

Back by popular demand is the Zoo To You event at Kids Day at the Union County Fair on Saturday. Young children are invited to the small animal barn to view incredible animals, courtesy of the Blank Park Zoo.

Those who attend the fair are asked to consider an All Events Wristband for the grandstand shows. Don’t miss a night of the grandstand action and save $5. This year participants can purchase an all events pass and get in each night to watch the demo derby, truck and tractor pull and two nights of rodeo.

Monday and Tuesday evening is mutton busting. Bring your under 60 pound cowboy or cowgirl to try their best to hold on the longest.

Fair contestants are reminded of swine vet check. Trailers will need to enter the fairgrounds from the east drive.

There is no trailer parking on the fairgrounds (with the exception of horse trailers in their designated space) All trailer parking is at the rec ball fields.
