Java J’s pours its last cup

Java J's owner Juliann Sinn poses with some of her famous fudge. Sinn will be retiring following the close of the store.

After 16 years of serving Creston, Java J’s will be closing its doors for the last time Wednesday, July 31.

The coffee shop, located inside True Value on Townline Street, was first opened by Juliann Sinn Sept. 15, 2008. Sinn said she first got the idea from her sister, who had a similar shop in Centerville. Sinn and her husband also own the True Value location.

Along with coffee, Java J’s has served a variety of other goodies, including Red Bull-infused drinks, soup, sandwiches and their famous fudge. This is the part of the store that will be closing, as Sinn looks to retire.

“I’ve been working full time since 1980 and I’ll be 64 this year, so I’m just kind of ready to slow down,” Sinn said. “We didn’t realize how much [of a staple] it was until we started to say goodbye to people. So many people have commented on Facebook or when they come in to get drinks and things. So many kind words, it’s almost overwhelming.”

Sinn first shared news of her retirement and the subsequent closing of Java J’s on Facebook June 28. She was quickly flooded with comments from community members and customers sharing memories of their time at the shop.

“You and your coffee will be missed,” Bobbie Gillespie commented. “Your place has a special place in my heart because my dad and I were waiting for the homecoming parade to start my senior year and he took me to Java J’s to get a smoothie and I instantly fell in love! Such a happy memory!”

While some reminisced, others asked about the rest of the shop, which includes gift items and home decor. Sinn said the bestsellers would still be around for purchase through True Value.

“It won’t be as extensive as it is now,” Sinn said. “I won’t need to be here because it’s going to be items that will sell themselves. They’ll have displays and things, which is going to be great. I can still have my hands in it but I don’t have to be here.”

Java J's, located inside True Value on Townline Street, will be closing July 31.

Through the years, Sinn said she’s loved all the people she’s been able to meet, both customers and employees.

“I’ve made so many friends. That’s kind of my main takeaway, the friendships that have been formed,” Sinn said. “Of course, employees through the years have been great, we’ve bonded. My daughter has worked here since day one until a year ago, almost two years ago. I miss her, it’s not quite the same without her.”

As she prepares for retirement, Sinn said she’s excited to see her grandchildren more.

“I‘ve watched both of my daughters get married and have kids. I have four grandkids and I hope to see them more,” Sinn said. “We’ll continue with the store, of course, and my husband will still be coming here everyday like he does, but hopefully I’ll be able to get him out of here more too.”

While she’s excited for retirement, Sinn said she’ll miss her time at Java J’s.

“Thank you so much for shopping with us and enjoying our drinks and food and fudge all these years,” Sinn said. “I’ve seen customers get married and have kids… 16 years is a long time. It’s been great getting to know the town and the people.”
