A Creston man has been charged with three felonies including vehicular homicide stemming from a Feb. 4 one-vehicle accident in Madison county.
Charles K. Lohoff, 30, was taken into custody Monday on a warrant for homicide by vehicle - operating under the influence, homicide by vehicle - reckless driving and knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious injury.
According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to 1016 Pitzer Road in Earlham for a motor vehicle accident.
Upon arrival, deputies spotted a deceased male, later identified as Jonathon D. Taylor, 42, of Adel, in a black 2020 Chevrolet Silverado. The driver was not at the scene.
Four hours later, Lohoff was found at a house just north of the crash.
Lohoff, who had bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech, admitted to driving the vehicle at the time of collision. He said when he left the scene, he knew the passenger was not OK.
Field sobriety testing showed signs of impairment. A preliminary breath test showed a BrAC above the legal limit.
Testing came back on Lohoff’s blood showing alcohol and marijuana metabolites in his system.
Data obtained from the vehicle showed a speed of 110 mph right before the crash and a speed of 90 mph upon collision with the telephone pole.
He was transported to the Madison County jail where he was later released from after posting $40,000 cash or surety bond.
