Seven area athletes were named to the 2018-19 all-district teams in Class 1A, 2A and 3A by the Iowa Girl Coaches Association Wednesday. Creston’s own Brielle Baker and Kelsey Fields were both named to the Class 3A southwest all-district team.
Creston firefighters completed their annual ice rescue training Feb. 12 at Summit Lake – a requirement that is necessary according to the department’s policy and to help ensure the safety of Union County residents.
As she stepped on stage Saturday at the Iowa State Center in Ames, Laura Granger said she was in tears, but to see her students cheering with their arms in the air and their hands forming hearts from their second row seats in the crowded theater of nearly 2,000 students, she felt an overwhelming sense of pride. ”It was amazing. I cried a lot,” said Granger, CCHS speech coach. “I don’t think people know how incredibly difficult it is to get the banner.” The banner Granger refers to is one that is awarded by a single critic to the group or individual in a given category. To receive a banner at the festival is to say this individual or group is the best in the state.

Marsha and Gary Davis of Creston receive the newly established Farm and Windbreak award during the annual awards luncheon for the Union County Soil and Water Conservation District held at the Cromwell Congregational Church.
Nine of 14 area Class 1A wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinal round with first-round victories Wednesday night at the State Wrestling Tournament. Nodaway Valley moved four of five ahead, all three Bedford/Lenox wrestlers advanced and Corning and Mount Ayr each advanced one.
The Creston girls bowling team qualified second for the state tournament with a score of 2,595 Saturday at regional competition at Panther Lanes. In addition Kayla Davidson of Creston and Samantha Haidiak of Lenox qualified for state individually.
No one was present for a public hearing at Monday’s Union County Board of Supervisors meeting for proposed building repairs and litigation to be funded by a General Obligation Bond. The estimated total package cost is 4.5 million with work done to replace bridges in Union County and asphalt for some high-traffic seal-coat roads, building repair and litigation.

Clean up, fix up, paint up day is set for Wednesday in two Union County teen centers. Afton’s teen center will be in the former Masonic Lodge on the corner of Douglas and Kansas streets and the council has waived the cost of city utilities for the center for one year. The city of Lorimor donated a building at the west edge of the business district in Lorimor for use as a teen center. The Lorimor site could open as early as March 1.
In Saturday’s Class 2A Sectional wrestling tournament four champions were crowned by Creston and a total of eight wrestlers advanced to next Saturday’s District Tournament in Adel. Crowned were Creston’s Michael Mickey, Dylan Long, Charlie Tripp and Andrew Hayes.
The Creston school district will have an additional $54,450 to help dropouts and potential dropouts. “This program will take the form of a substantial summer school, and an after-school tutoring program for students who are at risk of failing,” said Dr. Gary Cowell, Creston superintendent of schools, announcing approval of the district’s application by the Iowa Department of Education.
The first year could be a real zoo. That’s Creston Mayor Larry Wynn’s assessment of proposed amendments to the city code that would require all dogs and cats six months of age or older within the city limits to be licensed. There was discussion, but no motion to adopt the changes, and Wynn said the issue will be discussed at the March 2 council meeting.

The second traffic signal in a pedestrian safety island at Adams and Maple Streets has been broken off by a vehicle. Police say the signal was broken off Saturday night by an unidentified vehicle.
Creston captured the win in the 2A District wrestling tournament and qualified four wrestlers for the state wrestling tournament held this Saturday. Advancing to the state tournament are Terry Cooper, Devon Goezt, Jeff Christy and Kean Richard
