Throwback Thursday - Feb. 8, 2024

10 years ago (2014)

Turn up the heat. Creston School District’s bus barn will have heated concrete after findings from a state code came to light during the regularly scheduled December board meeting. According to the code, the bus barn will have to have a concrete floor. Originally, the board decided to store some buses outside, but through a city code, it was discovered all vehicles had to be housed in a building. Then, the board decided to give the building a gravel floor, but then the Iowa code came to light.

Trailing 17-12 in the first quarter, the Creston girls basketball team scored 17 unanswered points to build a cushion on Clarinda in a 61-48 win here Thursday on senior night.

Creston Library Board recently signed an 18-month contract with Marketing Kinetics — a strategic marketing firm from Lamoni — hired to help the board in their Lincoln-to-Library fundraising efforts. This is the second marketing company the library board has hired since fundraising began for the project in 2010.

20 years ago (2004)

Creston coach Tim Sauer believes perseverance won his basketball team a good road game Monday night. Trailing by as many as nine points on two occasions, the Panther girls were down but not out and finished with a 58-55 conference win over Harlan and a season sweep.

Utility and street additions to the College Park Subdivision in northeast Creston will begin to take shape late next month or early April. The Southwestern Community College Board of Directors Tuesday approved plans and specifications for development in the subdivision to include utilities and construction of a cul-de-sac extending south and west of Mulberry Street.

Creston’s First National Bank announced promotions at the Jan. 29 annual board meeting. Danny Purdum, president, was named CEO, Pat Lane was promoted to vice president and Syd Hudek was promoted to assistant vice president.

40 years ago (1984)

South Lincoln Street, from U.S. Highway 34 to Patt Street, will be reconstructed following approval at the regular meeting of the city council Tuesday. Estimated cost of the project is $125,000, according to Art Becker, city engineer, for fiscal year 1984-85.

A team of local seventh and eighth grade students have been selected to represent the Creston school in Mathcounts, a new nationwide math program for junior high students. Local students selected are James Peckham, Mike Becker and Sherry Sammons, all eighth graders and John Brentnall, a seventh grader.

The Crossroads Mental Health Center has established a separate division for alcohol and drug services entitled Action Now Chemical Dependency Treatment Services, located at 226 N. Pine, next door to Crossroads. After licensure is approved, the facility will provide assessment and evaluation of chemical usage, assistance for families and friends with intervention and treatment programs.

The Tingley Kitchen Band was on hand Wednesday to help the Creston Congregate Meal program celebrate its 10th anniversary. Approximately 175 senior citizens attended the noon meal and enjoyed the entertainment. Recognition went to Gladys Clark, the mealsite’s first cook who still works there.

Watch out Detroit. Two guys from Creston have set up their own car assembly plant. West Central Roadsters, recently incorperated by Terry Plowman and Jim Jones, doesn’t actually manufacture cars, but it does assemble kits.

60 years ago (1964)

Clifford F. Jackson, 54, former Union County Treasurer, was arraigned in Union County District Court just before noon today on a charge of embezzlement. Jackson, who resigned from his position Jan. 13, was charged Friday with converting to his own use $20,000, which was the property of Union County.

Corning became the 10th victim of the Creston Panthers here Friday night and junior Randy Long established a new Hawkeye Seven conference record during the Panthers 67-46 decision. The Panthers are now 10-4 for the season and 7-4 in the conference. Long ended the night with 24 points and now has 280 points in the conference, beating the mark of 259, set by Irv Albright of Red Oak in 1950-51.

The Creston post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was holding to first place ranking in the “largest VFW post in the state” standings as of Jan. 31, according to figures received here. The top four posts to date are Creston: 702; Cedar Rapids 693; Council Bluffs 644 and Muscatine 565.
