Throwback Thursday - Jan. 11, 2024

15 years ago (2009)

A boil advisory, which had been in effect for 12 days, was lifted for all of Southern Iowa Rural Water Association customers Saturday afternoon. The advisory was due to a filtration system problem at the Creston water treatment plant.

Two days after upsetting Harlan in a conference dual meet, the Panthers continued moving forward by extending its streak of championships in their own tournament Saturday. Going 5-0 in championship matches, Creston/O-M finished with 188.5 points and 11 placewinners overall.

The Social Security office in Creston is serving Southwest Iowa from a new location at 906 East Taylor Street. The new location opened Monday and manager Peggy Rogers said there was no interruption in service to customers because the office actually moved over the weekend.

Iowans are dealing with some of the coldest weather in over a decade as temperatures plunge to more than 20 below zero with wind chills of 50 below.

Four and a half months ago Lorimor found itself without a mayor. Although they have gotten by with Melvin Davis serving as mayor pro-tem during that time, a special election scheduled for Tuesday will give the town more permanent leadership.

25 years ago (1999)

Two more long-time staff members are stepping down at Southwestern Community College. Add Paul Somers and Betty Wallace to a growing list of veteran teachers and administrators reaching their end of their careers at the college, after board approval of their early retirement requests Tuesday.

There aren’t many times a team can go scoreless for the final 6 minutes 37 seconds of a game and still win, but it was the case here Tuesday night as Creston managed to pull out a 47-46 win over Cumberland-Massena-Anita in a non-conference girls basketball game.

The NBA’s greatest player made it official today. Michael Jordan retired from the Chicago Bulls after 13 seasons, six championships and countless high-flying dunks.

Danny A. Purdum, president of the First National Bank in Creston, Afton and Lorimor, announced the promotions of Arleta Mullin and Dana Phipps at its December board of directors meeting. Mullin has been named vice president and Phipps has been named assistant vice president.

35 years ago (1989)

The Southwestern Community College Board of Directors approved Tuesday a new jobs training agreement for $150,000 with Mederer Corp. in Creston, manufacturer of “Gummi Bears” and other candies.

Creston started out shooting from the outside and worked it inside when Clarinda came out of its zone, rolling to a 47-19 halftime lead on the way to a 90-50 romp Tuesday. Scott Driskell had a season-high 25 points as four Panthers scored in double figures.

Southwestern Community College’s vocal jazz ensemble Union Blues has been chosen to perform at the Iowa Music Educators Association state conference. Under the direction of Kevin Dobreff, choral music instructor, the ensemble will present a half-hour performance on Friday, Jan. 20 at the Hotel Fort Des Moines.

Rachel Wallace of Creston has been selected as a new member of the Outstanding High School Students of America. She was selected based on outstanding merit and accomplishments as an American high school student. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Wallace of Creston.

45 years ago (1979)

Larry Chase has resigned as executive director of the Crossroads Mental Health Center. His resignation to be effective at the end of this month, has been accepted by the Crossroads Board of Directors. He has been executive director for Crossroads since the center was established in September 1975.

Southwestern Community College homemaking classes will begin at the Creston High School on Monday, Jan. 15. Mary Clayton, instructor, will show simple ways to construct a man’s knit garment.

Petitions asking that immediate steps be taken to provide more adequate facilities for the Creston High School wrestling program were presented to the board of education of the Creston Community school district at its regular meeting Thursday. Bill Stuart and Kenneth Abel, representing the Mat Boosters, presented the petitions signed by approximately 450 people.

Losing just two matches, Creston’s Panthers rolled to their seventh straight dual wrestling victory of the year in Clarinda Thursday as they downed Clarinda 40-6.
