In an effort to create a “place people want to be” and to drive economic development, a street-scaping committee for Uptown Creston has been formed. Creston Mayor Gabe Carrol said by enhancing the city’s Uptown business district, not only will it create an area people want to visit, but a place businesses want to operate.
The Creston Chamber of Commerce Image Enhancement Committee has volunteered to create a motto and ultimately a logo for the City of Creston with the approval of the Creston City Council. The city currently has neither. The committee is tasking members of the public to pitch ideas for a city motto.
Kaeleigh Long and Dillon Mendez welcomed a daughter, Blakely Jo Mendez, to the world Jan. 4, 2021, at Greater Regional Hospital. Blakely, who is Greater Regional’s first delivery of 2021, was 6 pounds, 14 ounces and 19 inches long when she was delivered by Dr. Charles Cunningham 2:22 p.m. Monday.

As expected, District 1 supervisor Ron Riley is Union County’s supervisor chairman for 2011. Riley, two new supervisors – Lois Monday and Dennis Brown – as well as incoming elected officials filled the supervisors board room Monday morning, raised their right hand at approximately 9 a.m. and accepted their oath of office.
Kaiden Michael Blaisure, born Jan. 2, 2011, who weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces and was 19 inches long, was the first baby to be born at Greater Regional Medical Center in 2011. Mother, Philisha Blaisure of Corning received items from multiple local businesses for having the first baby of the year.
Republican Joni Ernst won Tuesday’s special election for the Senate vacancy in Iowa District 48 left by Gov. Kim Reynolds, defeating Democratic challenger Ruth Smith. The district is the largest geographically in the state, covering Clarke, Decatur, Ringgold, Union, Adams, Taylor and Montgomery counties; more than 7,388 votes were cast Tuesday. Ernst, of Red Oak and the auditor in Montgomery County, earned 4,978 total votes (67 percent).
The city of Creston is planning to keep homeowners educated when it comes to buying a house through the city. Creston City Council approved an agreement at Tuesday night’s council meeting for the city and Community Housing Initiatives Inc., to establish a homebuyer counseling course in conjunction with the Neighborhood Stabilization Program (NSP).

When 120 Iowa National Guard infantry officers and soldiers are deployed to southwest Asia for active duty, Daniel Froit of Afton will be among them. Froit has served with the Iowa Army National Guard Company C, 1st Battalion, 168th Infantry for less than two years. He is the son of Barbara Froit of Afton.
The chairman of the Union County Board of Supervisors says 2001 is full of high stakes challenges. “No. 1 is a focus on getting funding together for the North Cherry Street (widening and resurfacing) project,” said Mike King, re-elected chairman in Tuesday’s organizational meeting.
It seems like the more people Eminem offends, the more success he finds. The rapper who bashed everyone from Christina Aguilera to gays to his own mother on his best-selling and wickedly offensive album “The Marshall Mathers LP.” was hoored with four Grammy award nominations Wednesday, including album of the year.

Because of what company officials describe as a “legal oversight,” Heartland Food Products, Inc. must change its name. The new 86,000 square foot egg processing plant, nearing completion in Lenox, will henceforth be known as Pappetti’s of Iowa, according to Tom and Toni Rechsteiner, owners.
Births in Iowa remained on the rise in 1990, according to preliminary figures compiled by state officials. Through Nov. 30, there were 34,639 births in the state, a 3.65% increase over 1989, which in turn was 2% above the 1988 total.
Mosman TV and Appliance, Highwasy 34 East, is celebrating its 30th year of business this week. Don Mosman, owner, along with wife Helen (known as Sam), purchased the business Jan. 1, 1961, from Morrow Electric. They took over the television sales and service portion, then added sales and service of appliances 10 years later.
