United Methodist Church in Shannon City presented its annual live nativity and soup supper Sunday evening. The Christmas story was read during the viewing of the nativity and sung by the Marie Woosley family singers.

10 years ago (2013)

Lenox co-coach Steve Tussey got the upper hand in the battle of father vs. son, as the Lenox Tigers scored a 44-40 win over East Union in Afton on Friday, knocking off son, Thad Tussey’s Eagles.

The Creston girls gained their first Hawkeye 10 Conference victory in a defensive-oriented 40-34 victory over Atlantic here Friday. The win improved the Panthers to 1-1 in league play and 3-3 overall heading into Tuesday’s varsity doubleheader at No. 1-ranked Harlan.

Students with instruction permits will be holding their license a little bit longer starting Jan. 1, when laws signed by Gov. Terry Branstad will go into effect. The new law adds to the intermediate license the restriction drivers cannot have more than one unrelated minor passenger in the vehicle, and must hold the license for a minimum of 12 months.

The Union County Board of Supervisors will receive an unanimous recommendation by the 2014 compensation board Dec. 30 regarding wages for elected courthouse officials. The board plans to propose a 3.5% wage increase for Union County Attorney Tim Kenyon and Sheriff Rick Piel and 3% wage increase for Auditor Sandy Hysell, Recorder Paula White, Treasurer Kelly Busch and Union County Board of Supervisors. The board also plans to suggest an additional 2% cost-of-living adjustment for all elected courthouse officials.

15 years ago (2008)

A process which began two years ago was completed last week with the finishing of a new 96-foot by 60-foot livestock lab facility at the Southwestern Community College ag site.

Once they got a sloppy opening two minutes out of their system, the Creston boys basketball team overpowered Shenandoah here Friday night, 77-44.

Jared Bevins picked up a championship for fourth-place Creston/O-M at 189 pounds and Mount Ayr finished as the runner-up team in the Central Decatur Invitational Friday.

Green Valley State Park held its fifth special deer hunt in the park Nov. 22 and 23. Twenty-five hunters, using muzzleloaders, hunted within the park boundaries for antlerless deer. Forty-four deer were removed from the park during the hunt.

A compromise has been reached – for now. At Monday evening’s Graceland Cemetery Board meeting board members unanimously agreed to adopt a few changes to their grave decoration policy. The added guidelines allow for items such as shepherd’s hooks, wrought iron hangers, plaques, statues and stuffed animals.

20 years ago (2003)

U.S troops capture ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein Sunday. In English, Hussein told troops “I am the president of Iraq and I want to negotiate.” U.S. Special Forces replied “Regards from President Bush.”

In a letter to Santa, Cayden Shiltz, 9, of Creston writes, “I know I have been bad but I want to change. Please don’t put coal in my stocking. I want to be on the good list. You don’t have to listen to this but this is what I want for Christmas, I want Dana Fibs and her family to have a good Christmas without there father. And whatever you want me to have.”

After opening the season with a 16-point loss at Red Oak, the Creston boys have run off three straight victories, including a 46-45 overtime triumph here Friday over Clarinda and a 50-37 win at Shenandoah Saturday.

Creston wrestlers recorded 14 victories by fall and two technical falls in dominating Osceola Clarke and Norwalk Saturday in double dual action.

25 years ago (1998)

Southwestern knocked off junior college Division II defending national champion Kirkwood, 70-53, here Saturday in a key Region XI men’s basketball game.

Mike McCabe’s game plan was to make Clarinda beat his team from the outside. It worked, as Creston posted a 55-41 triumph over the Cardinals in a Hawkeye 10 girls basketball game here Friday night.

Veterans Cory Gerleman and Brian Bucklin scored 19 points apiece as Creston won its first Hawkeye 10 Conference boys basketball game of the season, 57-54, Friday night over Clarinda.

Students and teachers on the third floor of Orient-Macksburg School were ordered evacuated Monday by the state fire marshal’s office. The third floor was ordered closed until an acceptable means of escape is found.
