15 years ago (2008)

As of Friday afternoon 1,083 Union County residents had made their decisions already – that is, they’ve voted in the general election to be held Nov. 4. Early decision makers in Union County have joined about 200,000 other Iowans who have used their right to vote absentee.

It was supposed to be a competitive battle to the finish, this matchup of 1-5 teams Friday at Charles McGaffin Field. Creston O-M had been the victor 24 straight times and the Winterset Huskies claimed their last victory in 1983, when Creston struggled to a 1-8 finish. The Panther well ran dry in the second quarter and the Huskies ended the Panther win streak, 48-20.

During Friday’s halftime ceremonies Creston High School scholar athletes for 2007-08 were announced as Tyler Harris, Meghin Krambeck, Josh Maitlen, Adam Riley and Matt Lanning. The award requires a grade point average of 3.2 and at least seven letters earned in three sports.

The American Angus Association has announced Double K Ranch of Afton ranked 10th largest in registering the most Angus beef cattle in Iowa, having recorded 126 head during the 2008 fiscal year.

25 years ago (1998)

Creston High School’s marching band placed high in the ValleyFest Marching Band competition Saturday at Valley High School. The CHS band, directed by Mike Peters, placed third in Class 3A in class competition behind Saydel and Oskaloosa, and sixth overall among 25 bands.

Like the teens they’re helping create a center for, Youth Plus Initiative committee members Raquel Linch and Terry Higgins can hardly contain their excitement. Linch said plans for a teen center got a major boost Sept. 24 when the Dekko Foundation gave the group a $42,000 two-year grant.

Creston, East Union and Clarke (Osceola) hooked up in an evenly played volleyball triangular here Monday night. All three teams went 1-1.

The county’s latest road construction project will soon be open to traffic. Larry Latham, Union County assistant engineer, told the county board of supervisors Monday the paving project on Pole Road, Osage and Townline streets, is scheduled for completion this week.

35 years ago (1988)

The Plainsmen, a 35-voice men’s vocal chorus from the Clarinda area, will perform a concert of both sacred and secular songs Sunday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Creston.

The Congregate Meal Site in the restored Depot will be the gathering spot for contestants and judges Saturday morning for the annual Creston News Advertiser Holiday Cookbook Recipe contest. Following judging, those attending will be able to taste the food entered. The Holiday Cookbook will be distributed to CNA subscribers in the Oct. 27 newspaper.

An alleged murderer, stopped for a headlight violation Monday on Interstate 80 in Adair County, is being held in the Adair County Jail today awaiting extradition proceedings to Baltimore, Maryland. Andrew McCullough, 24, of Baltimore, is wanted in Baltimore for the homicide of his girlfriend and the attempted homicide of two other people there Aug. 10.

45 years ago (1978)

Possible widening and revamping of south Elm Street, from north of Highway 34 to Union Street, will be discussed by the Creston City Council at its regular meeting Tuesday night.

First and third period lapses sent the Creston Panthers down to their fifth defeat of the season here Friday night, as the Clarinda Cardinals took the Hawkeye Eight match-up 27-14. Now 1-5, the Panthers are struggling to get that second victory and will be the underdog again next week when they travel to Atlantic.

Kent Gade of Griswold was presented a certificate of appreciation by the Adams County chapter of the American Red Cross at its recent meeting. The award was a result of Gade’s actions at the time of an automobile accident last summer. Gade, head basketball coach at Griswold High School, came across the Adams County accident and used his prior Red Cross first-aid training to assist the accident victim, which may have saved her life.

More than 700 educators participated in the All-Area 14 In-Service in Creston Monday. Green Valley Area Education Agency sponsored the conference which focused on the theme of “Positive Thinking in Education.”
