Throwback Thursday

17 years ago (2006)

Josie Krings, Sarah Studer and Cody Hall, all of Creston, attended the 26th annual Iowa Agricultural Youth Institute held June 12-15 on the Iowa State University Campus. The three students were among 62 delegates chosen to attend based on academic achievement, school and community involvement and recommendations from school officials or organization representatives.

It only took Lenox coach Steve Westphal 767 games to make it to the Class 1A state finals, but it’s been well worth the wait. The Tigers used a five-run second inning to propel themselves to a 10-0 win in six innings over Wall Lake View Auburn. Lenox pitcher Jake Samos threw just 79 pitches and allowed just four hits to record his 14th win of the season.

Saturday, Lenox capped a sensational week at Des Moines’ Principal Park with the school’s first ever team state championship, a 10-5 win over Sentral of Fenton in eight innings. The victory may have sealed Lenox’s 2005-06 athletes’ status as the best in school history.

Tom Shaw, president of Shaw Newspapers, announced today, the purchase of Clarke County Publishing in Osceola, which was owned by Sally and the late Frank Morlan. The 4,000 circulation weekly Osceola Sentinel-Tribune newspaper and 16,000 circulation free distribution shopper, The Advertiser, are both publications of Clarke County Publishing.

30 years ago (1986)

A dream came true for a young Union County woman at Union County Fairgrounds in Afton Saturday night. Rhonda Bennett, daughter of Sharon and Louis Bennett of Creston, was crowned 1986 Union County Fair Queen by last year’s fair queen, Diane Hartsock.

At least three candidates plan on running for election to local school boards in the Sept. 9 election. Two candidates have filed, according to Auditor Jeannette Quick. Vickie Taylor of Creston will appear on the ballot for election to the Creston Community Schools Board of Directors. DeVonn Woods of Afton will seek his second term to the East Union School Board. Dr. Rodney Gold of Bedford intends to run for re-election to the Southwestern Community College Board of Directors.

Two tornados were sighted around 11:30 p.m. Monday one to two miles north of Creston according to Union County Sheriff John Coulter. Neither funnel touched the ground, Coulter said. Both were quite high in the sky, but could be seen with binoculars and lightening flashing in the background.

50 years ago (1966)

Janet Eklund, 17, of Shannon City and Joyce Hartsock, 16, of Diagonal, were crowned as 1966 Union County Queens of Conservation last night. They will represent Union County in the regional Queen of Conservation contest Aug. 5 in Clarinda during the Page County Fair.

A flight supper will be held at the Creston Municipal Airport Sunday, Aug. 7, serving from 4:30-7 p.m., sponsored by the Creston Airport Association. Everyone is invited to attend. Fly-ins will be admitted free to the supper while drive-ins will be charged.

The Creston swimming team evened their record at two wins and two losses last night as they edged Villisca in a dual meet held at the McKinley Pool 237-218. Creston swimmers won 31 first places in gaining the victory.

The tower for the mobile telephone service in Creston was being installed today on the south side of the telephone company building. The tower and antenna will be approximately 170 feet. Eleven channels have been designated for here.

77 years ago (1946)

The swimming beach at McKinley Park was ordered closed today by Mayor Ray Taylor and Dr. C. C. Rambo, city health officer, because of the poliomyelitis epidemic and a report from the state department of health indicating the water is contaminated. In closing the lake, Rambo pointed out that one of the causes of polio is believed to be swimming in contaminated water.

Resignation of Frank C. Locke as treasurer of Union County was accepted by the board of supervisors at a special meeting this morning. The board appointed Bessie Stearns to serve as treasurer until the general election in November. Locke was announced as being appointed vice president of First National Bank in Creston today.
