Shannon Waigand of Afton has been named in the top 20 most influential women in optical of 2018 in Vision Monday Magazine. Waigand is originally from a small town in Iowa and has an outreach office in Afton for her company, DaVinci Equity Group.

The Hagle sisters led the way in the Hawkeye 10 all-conference softball teams. Eighth-grader Gracie took first team honors for her standout hitting and shortstop abilities demonstrated in her first varsity season. Elder sister Chloe Hagle made second team for her leadership behind the plate, although her bat was anything but quiet.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has reached a major milestone – 100 years of work and service in Union County.

The top three best new foods at the Iowa State Fair are: Brown Sugar Pork Belly on a Stick from the Iowa Pork tent, All Iowa Belly Up Burger from The Rib Shack and Apple Eggrolls from the Applishus Stands.

Peg Anderson of Creston received a Governor’s Volunteer Award from Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg during a special recognition ceremony held June 19 in Pleasant Hill.

15 years ago (2008)

Veteran Lenox baseball coach Steve Westphal is taking his team to their third straight state tournament.

Creston will be the featured community on the Iowa Public Television “The Iowa Journal” program beginning at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Changes were approved in two varsity coaching positions Monday night by the Creston School Board. The board accepted the resignation of head baseball coach Bill Krejci after two seasons and the resignation of head volleyball coach Susan Harris after three seasons.

This year’s McKinley Park Festival will feature local act Big Al’s Blue’s Busters. The band is comprised of members Mike Ketchum, Julie Weisshaar, Todd Woodward, Jerry Peoples, Tim Waske and Michael Getsfred.

25 years ago (1998)

A single bid was received for Creston street projects at the scheduled bid opening Friday. Cedar Valley Corporation of Waterloo submitted a bid for $605,867.46 for repairs Creston Public Works Director Tom Myer said were estimated at $408,390.

Best Selling books this week are- in hardcover fiction: “Point of Origin” by Patricia Cornwall; in non-fiction/general: “Sugar Busters” by Steward, Andrews and Balart; in mass market paperbacks: “Unnatural Exposure” by Patricia Cornwall and in trade paperbacks: “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood” by Rebecca Wells.

The Windrow Restaurant and Sports Bar is hosting a “Pre-Sturgis Bike Expo,” Sunday, July 28. Meet the riders, see the bikes and enjoy free “Brew City” appetizers.

Creston’s baseball team got some sound hitting and terrific defense as it opened Class 3A District Tournament play with an impressive 11-4 triumph over host Winterset Saturday night.

35 years ago (1988)

Three area senior citizens claimed places – two of them gold medalists – in the recent Senior Olympics held at West Des Moines. Winning gold medals in the bowling competition were Elmo Bonus and Bobbie Rush. Shelby Rush received a bronze medal in the competition.

The 63rd annual Premium List Handbook of the Union County Fair, which begins Saturday, is dedicated to Leo Kaster of Afton. The dedication to Kaster was made for his “many years years of faithful service to Union County.”

Terri Stephans, daughter of Jerry and Barb Stephans of Diagonal, was crowned the 1988 Ringgold County Fair Queen Thursday evening at the county fairgrounds. First runner-up was Billi Hunt, daughter of Lois Hunt of Diagonal and second runner-up was Tracy Stephens, daughter of Don and Julia Stephens of Redding.

Vic Belger’s club had something to prove. After Thursday’s Class 3A district final in Clarinda, eighth-ranked Council Bluffs St. Albert is a believer. Becoming the first Creston club to record 30 wins in a single-season, the Panthers downed the highly favored Falcons 7-0.
