DES MOINES––An Iowa Department of Corrections worker was hospitalized Wednesday after police say a teenage inmate attacked him and stole his transport van.
On Wednesday, the Creston Police Department charged a 17-year-old Creston teen with operating a vehicle without owner consent and theft, first degree. Due to age, the name was not released.
Wednesday evening, the juvenile was taken into custody by the Cerro Gordo Sheriff’s Office after he was found to be driving the vehicle he did not have permission to operate.
The juvenile was ordered to be transported to Central Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Eldora by Iowa Juvenile Court officials.
During the transport, the driver pulled over in Mason City after the juvenile told him he felt sick. It was there the juvenile reportedly beat the driver, stole the transport van and made his way to the Des Moines area.
Des Moines Police Department Sergeant Paul Parizek told WHO 13, during a pursuit with police, the juvenile crashed the vehicle into the median at Hubbell and E. University avenues on the east side of Des Moines. After a short foot chase, he was taken into custody.
The teen will now face additional charges including assault, theft and escape from custody.
