For some time, a small sign adorned the front of the Union County Courthouse to inform those entering not to bring any firearms or weapons. However, according to a Creston local, that sign is an infringement of Iowan’s rights. Dillion Daughenbaugh, a local veteran and area firefighter, has been in Creston for over five years now and came to speak about the sign to the Board of Supervisors during their weekly meeting Monday morning at the Union County Courthouse.
Creston softball’s high-powered offense carried it to an 11-1 win over Clarinda in five innings Monday night. After one week of play, the Panthers entered the game with a .368 average, second highest in the conference with more than 90 at-bats.
Creston baseball picked up its first win since the season opener Tuesday night with a 5-2 win over Shenandoah. The Panthers put Gavin Shawler on the mound, who entered with only three innings pitched, but had racked up seven strikeouts. Shawler took a no-hitter through five innings, before a sharp hit ball to shortstop in the top of the sixth resulted in a single.

Lorri Riley of Spearfish, South Dakota, was named the new softball coach at Southwestern Community College. Riley will also be the assistant women’s basketball coach and dorm director at Southwestern.
Last weekend, Rusty Zimmerman and Jeremy Giles of Creston, qualified for the junior high regional track meet in Johnston. Zimmerman finished second in the shot put and fourth in the discus, while Giles was fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus. The two will move on to regional competition in Lincoln, Nebraska, July 1-2.
After searching through a pool of four dozen potential applicants, a Creston School District committee has narrowed its finalists for superintendent position to five. The finalists, all superintendents, are: Ned Cox, Sidney School District; Craig Artist, West Branch School District; Dr. Gordon Cook, Mid-Prairie (Wellman) School District, Dr. Joe Kirchoff, West Delaware (Manchester) School District and Tim Hood, Earlham School District.
Alan Shaffer and wife, Julie, are moving the Creston Dairy Queen from its location at 103 N. Oak Street to the corner of South Maple and Highway 34. Dairy Queen may not be the only new face on Highway 34 in Creston. If all goes according to plan, a Long John Silvers Seafood Shoppe and TCBY could join the highway’s restaurant row.

A big candy-striped canvas cathedral arrived in Creston yesterday and was erected on a lot at Townline and Poplar streets. “Old-time Gospel Services” will begin at 8 p.m. tonight. Dr. Jerry Brock of Sedalia, Missouri, will be the featured Evangelist.
A Pick-Up Pull will be held at 1 p.m. this afternoon at the Don Burich Farm, one mile west of Creston on Adams Street, paying $3,100. The pull is sanctioned by the Tri-State Truck Pullers Association and will include 5,800 pound super stock, modified and showroom stock classes as well as 6,200 pound super stock and modified classes. The event is sponsored by the Creston Jaycees.
Kevin Alexander’s run scoring single, sending Paul Loos home with the winning run, capped a dramatic comeback by the Panthers here Tuesday night as they downed the Carroll Kuemper Knights, 8-7.
The Rev. Lester Pearson was named Lion of the Year by the Creston Lions’ Club Tuesday evening following a club picnic at the Cromwell Park.

Robert W. Robinson, 47, elementary supervisor for Creston Community Schools, suffered only a skinned hand and a bruise on the head when the airplane he was landing swerved into a bank and burned at the Osceola Municipal Airport Monday afternoon.
Motorists who receive tickets for overtime parking in metered zones in the Creston business district will pay twice as much as at present beginning Friday. Bernard Shea, parking meter superintendent, said the new tickets, calling for a 50-cent violation fee, will be used for the first time Friday.
Creston B and B and Lenox split a doubleheader in Lenox Sunday, the host softball club taking a 6-5 victory in the opener while B and B won the nightcap, 13-8, in extra innings.
Jan Lesan did a fine job in the girls’ state junior golf meet last week. She finished third in the first flight, shooting 96, 94, 92 and 88, in that order. She was tied for the lead going into the final hole but ran into tree trouble. She didn’t bother to come home following the tournament but was picked up by her father and they headed for Canada.
