Paula White has been at the Union County Courthouse for more than 30 years, and she is retiring from her elected position as Union County recorder, which she has held for 22 years, on Friday. White was elected in 1995, to succeed the retiring recorder, Jean Richardson whom she had worked under since 1985. Deputy recorder Katie Carlton will be sworn in as Union County recorder Monday.
With Iowa’s new law allowing the sale and purchase of consumer-grade fireworks, one local is taking advantage by opening a fireworks shop in town. Brandon Vonk, owner of Top Notch Fireworks, will be have a tent set up at 900 S. Division Street.
City council voted to approve a new, 20-year lease for Amtrak at the restored depot. The decision comes after extended negotiations spanning back a few years. With the updated lease, Amtrak will be funding building improvements as well. Amtrak agreed to pay for staff, janitorial work and repair work on the on the building.
Tied at 4-4, Creston broke away for a seven-run fifth inning in defeating Red Oak 12-5 Monday night. The Panthers had six hits in the inning along with two walks on one of seven Tiger errors in the game, taking an 11-4 lead. Starting pitcher Brenden McDowell battled through some early control issues and picked up the win with two runs allowed in four innings.

Mandy Bolinger is a different person now that she is “Out of Africa.” Bolinger, 21, daughter of Junior and Sandy Bolinger of Creston, returned in late May after a four-month stay in Zimbabwe, Africa. Bolinger, a 1994 CHS graduate, will be a senior at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and went on the trip through a program offered by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest. She also received 1.5 semester credits toward her industrial psychology degree.
Creston’s softball team went 2-1 Saturday in the Atlantic Classic. The Panthers blasted AHST (Avoca) 16-3 and Boyer Valley (Dunlap) 15-4 before losing to Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln 4-3.
Creston firefighters assisted in extinguishing a blaze at the former Macksburg High School Monday night. The effort was part of a mutual aid response to Orient’s fire department which included manpower and approximately 28 total vehicles from Afton, Greenfield, Winterset, St, Marys, Dexter, St. Charles, Earlham, Lorimor and Redfield.

Denny Jay hurled three-hit ball, allowing only one Glenwood runner to reach third base, here Tuesday night as the Creston Panthers won their sixth straight victory and Hawkeye Eight opener 4-0.
A 10-inch sewer line from near the swimming pool parking lot in McKinley Park, north to Kirby Street and east to Lincoln Street is being replaced. The new main will replace one which was found to be defective sewers were being tested and part of the work will be paid under a grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Members of the Union County Sheriff’s posse were given duty assignments for Macksburg Skillet Days, National Skillet Throw, Cow Country Field Day and the 4th of July Celebration. The posse met at the Law Enforcement Center.

The dairy business, often thought of as a side-line to corn and hogs in Iowa, actually is a multi-million enterprise in this area. Estimates are it totals upwards to $3 million annually, and this week special attention is going to be paid to it––as this community’s observance of June Dairy Month takes place Wednesday, June 12 for a ‘dairy fair.’
Creston Mayor Fred Urbach will compete in the Dairy Fair milking contest. He will compete against mayors from Corning, Lenox and Greenfield.
More than 500 people attended the ‘appreciation day’ at the Skelgas Store here Saturday. Refreshments of ham sandwiches, potato chips and coffee were served to the visitors.
