Throwback Thursday

Weather conditions were less than ideal for the shot put finals Friday as Kelsey Fields entered the circle against the best Class 3A has to offer. Despite rain, Fields still put together a quality performance, finishing third in the finals with a longest throw of 38 feet, 3 inches.

The Creston boys soccer team beat East Sac County 2-0 Monday night, winning the first round of the Class 1A Substate 7 bracket. Riding a five-game skid entering Monday the Panthers were hungry out the gate to get the monkey off their back, putting multiple shots on net in the first few minutes. The Panthers finally broke through in the goal column with a score by Matt Borha, who scored both Panther goals.

During its regular meeting Tuesday, Steve Wintermute, at-large representative, became the mayor of Creston by council appointment. Brenda Lyell-Keate, Ward 4 representative, originally made a motion to appoint Rich Madison 2nd Ward representative and mayor pro-tem, to the position of mayor. The motion was voted down by council members. Gabe Carroll then made a motion to appoint Wintermute to the position, which passed. Wintermute will serve as mayor until the end of the city’s Nov. 5 election.

An EF2 tornado struck at approximately 1:30 am. Tuesday morning in Adair County causing one fatality, one serious injury and destroyed one home. The National Weather Service said the tornado was atypical. From 1980 to now, less than 5% of tornados have struck between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m.. The temperature at the time was in the mid 50s, not typical tornado weather.

Brielle Baker is named Creston Community High School Female Athlete of the Year. Following softball season, Baker will end her high school career with 15 varsity letters and countless accolades to her name after being a four-sport athlete through her entire Panther career.

14 years ago (2009)

Diplomas were awarded to 90 graduates of Creston High School and three graduates of High Lakes Country Academy in commencement exercises Sunday at the CHS gymnasium. Student speakers were Christopher Meyer, class valedictorian, and Aubreeanna Dolan-Winners, senior student council president.

After months of debate and discussion, the Creston School Board made a decision on the future of senior projects at their meeting Monday night. A motion by board member Chad Briley, seconded by Brian Strider, was passed, making senior projects an elective class though 2012, at which time the board will again vote on the projects role in curriculum.

Creston seventh grader Brandon Phipps had been gunning for the open 800 meter record. And last Thursday the record was broken. Phipps, in the Hawkeye 10 track meet, broke the former record by nearly four seconds. Kevin Irr had held the record with a time of 2:19.30 since 2005. Phipps ran a time of 2:15.97

Creston will send four to state track May 21, 22 and 23 in Des Moines. Tyler Coenen - long jump; Nicole Hunter - 100 meter dash, 100 meter hurdles, 400 meter shuttle hurdles; Kierra Smith - 400 meter shuttle hurdles; Morgan Evans - 400 meter shuttle hurdles and Jill Johnson - 400 meter shuttle hurdles, all qualified for the event.

24 years ago (1999)

The Creston School District will share one of its buildings with MATURA Head Start preschool beginning next fall. The school board Monday approved a request for approximately 20 Head Start students ages 4 and 5, to attend morning sessions four days a week in a Franklin Elementary classroom.

With 249 new computers and more than 27 miles of wires installed to network the system, Creston’s school technology plan took a giant leap forward this year. In a summary of this year’s technology plan to the Creston School Board Monday night, the board learned the district has placed at least one computer in each classroom in the district and two labs of 25 new computers in the high school.

Southwest Creston will be getting a new look this summer. Construction is set to begin within the next 60 days on a 30-unit senior living complex along High and Dry Road across the street from R.E. Lewis Refrigeration after rezoning was approved at Tuesday’s Creston City Council meeting. The council approved rezoning a four-acre site from R3 (mobile home) to R2 (multi-family) and approved plans for the complex.
