At last year’s Cardinal Relays Creston senior Jay Wolfe broke a 46-year-old record in the 800 meters that had been held by Jerome Howe. Friday in Clarinda, he broke his own record, winning with a time of 1:56.74. And he did it in tennis shoes after the shoestring on his spikes snapped in half

Creston’s Natalie Mostek officially signed a Letter of Intent Friday to attend Des Moines Area Community College in Boone on a softball scholarship. She follows two former Panthers, first baseman Shelby Kramer and shortstop Kaitlin Briley, who was a two-time All-American for the DMACC team who placed third in the NJCAA national championships last year.

The Creston boys soccer team kept their record intact of not being scored on except for penalty kicks, improving 3-1 for the season Monday in an 8-0 victory over Nodaway Valley. The Panthers have won two matches by an 8-0 score.

Creston Hy-Vee will be Southwestern Community College’s new food service provider in the fall, after the SWCC Board of Directors approved a two-year contract with the local grocery store at Tuesday’s meeting.

28 years ago (1995)

The Creston Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors held a ribbon cutting at Five Star Fitness, 316 W. Montgomery Street. Co-owners of the business are Tom Hartsock and Billy Stuart.

A five-cent increase in the levy rate for Creston Community School District taxpayers is contained in the 1995-96 budget approved by the district’s board of directors in special session Wednesday.

Word from those in charge is that the opening of the new Southern Prairie YMCA will be delayed several weeks until as late as June 1. The delay is the result of several factors, most notably the heavy rains of recent days. Some 125 YMCA memberships were sold during a membership drive last Saturday.

Creston junior Sarah Vicker tied her personal best at Clarinda in the high jump to help the Pantherette girls track team to a fifth place finish in the Class 3A competition at the Clarinda Relays Thursday. Vicker’s clearance of 5 feet 1 inch ties her best set last April.

48 years ago (1975)

More than 1,000 children scrambled through four acres in McKinley Park this morning, looking for 3,200 chocolate Easter eggs which had been hidden by volunteers fireman. The hunt had been postponed twice because of unfavorable weather and wet grounds in the park.

Edith Bevans, who has worked for Gits Manufacturing in Creston for 27 ½ years, retired Friday. Her fellow employees joined together to gift her a slo-cooker and a morning coffee was held in her honor.

The Nicolo Marionettes will present “Peter Pan” at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 15 in the high school auditorium. Adults are $1 and student entry is 50 cents. The event is sponsored by the Creston High School Vocal Department.

Crestmooor Golf Club will open to play Sunday afternoon, according to course superintendent Walter Arnold. Due to wet conditions and frost still in the greens, this will be the first time golfers have had to play Crestmoor. No golf carts will be allowed until probably next week.

Steps to choose an architectural firm to design the proposed new Creston High School building will be begun by the board of education of the Creston Community School District at a special meeting Tuesday night.

The last of the two tall smokestacks at the Central Iowa Power Cooperative generating plant, north of Creston, is being taken down. The 150 feet tall stack was built in 1950. About one-third of it has already been removed.

68 years ago (1955)

First and second grade pupils in Union County will receive their first shot of the Salk polio vaccine on Thursday, April 21, unless there is a delay in the delivery of the vaccine. The second shot will be given three weeks later on May 12.

Dr. Thomas Francis, Jr. and Dr. James Salk released a report on the effectiveness of Dr. Salk’s polio vaccine, calling it a success. Dr. Francis said “There can be no doubt now that children can be inoculated successfully against polio.” The vaccine was licensed for use Tuesday afternoon a few hours after the report was released.

Maury Geist, head basketball and track coach at Mount Ayr High School the past two years, has accepted a contract to coach basketball, assist in football and teach industrial arts and drawing at Creston High School, D. Marvin Waltz president of the Creston Board of Education announced today.
