According to a statement released this morning by Greater Community Hospital, the hospital’s clinic will remain open. Last month the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Monte Neitzel said the clinic was scheduled to close Jan. 31 due to economic and contractual differences with Dr. Gandhi and Dr. Cheerla. Cheerla still plans to leave but Gandhi has signed a one-year contract.
Southwestern Community College didn’t have to go far to find a new administrator. The SWCC Board of Directors approved a recommendation to hire Marjorie Welch of Afton as director of arts and sciences. Welch has been an instructor at the college in the science department for nine years.
The Orient-Macksburg school board voted 3-1 Thursday to deny a proposal that would have brought eight-man football to the district, ending a 17-year sharing agreement with Creston High School.
29 years ago (1993)
Gasoline prices have plunged to the lowest level in five years. Prices are now below 90 cents a gallon at many pumps, a drop of at least a dime in the past several weeks. Creston gas prices, however remained unusually high today at $1.02 a gallon.
The Panthers easily won a dual with the Raiders, 63-9, when Mount Ayr had to forfeit at seven weights. Three of head coach Ron Scott’s wrestlers missed the meet because of illness.
At Tuesday’s regular meeting, the Creston City Council took the first step toward establishing a TIF program. Items the city will be looking at for TIF money use include improved street lighting in the downtown area, replacing cracked sidewalks and removing the telegraph poles and wires along the south side of Adams Street.
Afton Mayor H.M. Amos has withdrawn his protest of the Nov. 2 city election in which he was defeated by challenger Rick Foote, 135-83.
A base salary package increase of 7.2% and a new early retirement policy are part of the Creston Education Association’s first proposal for the 1994-95 master contract. The Creston School Board of Directors will respond its initial offer Dec. 21.
Creston native Chad Briley earned first-team honors on the Pioneer League all-conference football team.

A capacity audience filled the Farmer’s Co-op Harvest Room Tuesday evening to view a fashion show sponsored by Pantherette Pals, the sports booster club for girls.
“This can’t be happening,” was the thought of Randy Simpson as he lay on the floor at the Harvey Brothers Garage here Thursday afternoon, under a robber’s gun. Simpson, a mechanic at the garage, walked in on the first armed robbery in Ringgold County in six to seven years with Richard Cooper, another mechanic at the garage. The men waited about one minute after the gunman left before crawling into an office and calling the Ringgold County Sheriff’s Department.
Creston Schools will ask the Creston Park and Recreation Board for an increase in the amount the city pays for use of school recreation facilities soon. At Thursday evenings meeting, the board of education discussed increasing the amount from $800 to $1,000 a year.
A Creston student has been named editor of the Buena Vista College student newspaper, beginning in February. Bob Lorimor, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.K. Lorimor of Creston will be the photography editor of the “The Tack.”
