During a Creston School Board special meeting Tuesday night, the board approved a bid of $1,787,000 from Breiholz Construction Company for construction of a tornado safe room at Creston Elementary/Middle School. “That does not include the finishes inside,” said former Creston Superintendent Tim Hood. “We took those out, and we’ll just have to do those per bid.”
Greater Regional Medical Center announces the completion of their tornado recovery. The new Surgery Center, Birthing Center, Patient Care floors and Therapy Pool are now open. An open house will be held 2 -5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16 for the public.
The Creston Cross County Invitational turned into a showcase of strong local talent, as Creston sophomore Maria Mostek and Corning senior Tiffany Shephard battled during the girls varsity race. Shephard eventually pulled out ahead, winning the Class B individual crown, while Mostek followed closely behind and won the Class A individual title.
30 years ago (1992)
If you blink this year, you won’t miss ‘em, although you’ll probably hear ‘em before you see ‘em. This year’s Balloon Days parade will include a second straight “flyover,” this time by two Iowa Army National Guard “Huey” helicopters.
Frankie Valens, former pop singer best known for his renditions of such hits as “This Magic Moment” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” and his wife Phyllis, a widely acclaimed concert pianist and published songwriter, will hold two Christian music concerts in Creston. At 8 p.m. Sept. 19, the duo will be at the Berning Activity Center on West Adams Street and at 10 a.m. Sept. 20 the Faith Christian Fellowship, next to A&W, will hold the concert.
The 120-year-old Spaulding Center School, located north of Creston on Iowa Highway 25, was given the death sentence this week. The Union County Board of Supervisors voted Monday to let the local fire department burn down the old building as a training drill.
The skies cleared and the balloons flew twice over the weekend during Creston’s annual Balloon Days, leaving organizers smiling with satisfaction. Both Saturday morning’s and afternoon’s flights carried balloons almost directly over Creston on southeasterly winds.
50 years ago (1972)
The Creston board of education may discontinue the system of volunteer student safety patrols at the elementary schools and replace with adults because of a liability question. Such patrols are now operated at Lincoln, Franklin and Irving Elementary schools on a volunteer basis. President Frank Ide said he has been approached by a number of parents since it had been reported on state levels that parents might be responsible for damages as the result of some mis-judgement and error by a student patrol”
Damage in Union County from last week’s floods was reported at $1,250,000 by Union County disaster committee to the state agricultural conservation and stabilization service office at Des Moines.
Union County residents were warned by County Attorney James Waltz today to be wary of some magazine salesmen who have been working in the county recently.
Offices of the Iowa State Employment Service will be moved Friday from their present location under 206 N. Elm Street to quarters in the new office building on the east side of Elm Street at Mills Street.
70 years ago (1952)
Lloyd Penn, manager of the Creston Bottling Company here for 19 years, said today he will leave Creston late this month to operate the 7-up Bottling Company at Little Rock, Arkansas. Penn and Harry and James Tyler of Villisca have purchased the Little Rock concern and Penn will manage it.
A community-wide service will be held in Creston in connection with the public announcement and presentation of the new Standard Revised Version of the Holy Bible. Publication services will be held in at least 3,000 communities over the United States and Canada the same evening – Tuesday, Sept. 30.
State Highway Patrolmen and Creston City Policemen checked 715 automobiles in a safety drive here Wednesday night. They reported today that 143 tickets were given for faulty equipment, covering 201 violations. The check, part of a statewide drive, was made at Sumner Avenue and West Adams Street.
Creston News Advertiser announces a carrier delivery price increase effective Sept. 22. The cost will be increased to 30 cents per week in Creston. The continued increases in costs of materials, especially newsprint, and of production, make this adjustment necessary.
