Creston High brings back drama camp

Students entering sixth through ninth grade next school year and interested in stage performance are invited to Rising Stars Drama Camp June 27-30 at Creston High School.

The camp returns after a couple of years off because of COVID.

“This is a great way for kids who are interested in acting and speech to get exposure to what it’s like and to get the experience,” said Laura Granger, high school speech coach.

The camp will last about two and one-half hours each day for the four days with lessons and activities from Creston Community High School speech and drama students. Granger will be assisted by Kelly Marcus who had a similar camp at Southwestern Community College. Of the six Creston students assisting, two of them have attended the camp.

“We want to focus on middle school age students,” Granger said. She said that age group typically understands the concepts of acting and public speaking. Topics include acting, improvisation, musical theatre, stage combat, light and sound booth operations, costume and makeup, script writing and character development. Granger said stage combat is learning how to dramatically present physical violence between actors.

The camp will conclude with a performance of an excerpt from a lighthearted play that has a plot of Disney character Snow White as if she was in the 1970s. The performance is also considered a reader’s theater where participants read the script. The show will be at 7 p.m. June 30 at the high school auditorium.

“This can be a great outlet for kids not in sports and are looking for some kind of outlet,” she said.

There is a cost for the camp. Deadline to register is June 3. Information is at Creston schools or can be found online at http://crestonspeechdrama.weebly.com/drama-camp.html.
