50 years ago (1972)
Boy Scout Troop 129 of Creston held a weekend campout at Green Valley State Park. The scouts met at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Methodist Church and went to the park where they set up camp. Several scouts who had been working towards First Class Rank, finished the final two miles needed at the park. After setting up camp, they spent the afternoon fishing , exploring the park and observing wildlife at the northern part of the lake. They broke down camp Sunday after noon lunch.
The Creston Panthers captured second place overall in the 36th annual Clarinda relays. Gold medals were taken home for 3 events; two mile, medley relay and 220 yard dash. The two mile team of Randy Hampton, Greg Driskell, Tom Brotherton and Steve Jackson finished with a time of 8:30.4; Bill Antisdel, Steve Betts, Pat Montague and Steve Jackson, medley relay team, finished with a time of 3:46 and Curtis Bolinger took home gold, winning the 220 yard dash in :23.5.
The Creston Board of Education read and formally approved contracts for 10 teachers entering the Creston school system next year. Approved contracts were to Eldon Gammell, Head girls basketball coach and junior high english; Sally Becker, speech, english and debate; Jack Blazek, Head football coach, junior. and senior high physical education; Dolores Christensen, high school librarian; Dan Settle, high school social studies, assistant girls cage coach; Helen Baumann, elementary vocal music; Kerry Chase, first grade; Jone Snyder, elementary; Sharon Howe, elementary and Midge Scurlock, full time (previously part time) physical education. The board advised that eight vacancies still remained.
Glen Tull, representing Beauty Haven, Creston, was awarded first place in the Iowa Hair Fashion Competition on Sunday in Des Moines, during the 38th Annual Convention of National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists. Mr. Tulls model for the event was Mrs. Bob Frey. He will travel to Palm Springs, California, in July, to represent Iowa at the National Competition.
75 years ago (1947)
Hundreds of acres of farmland flooded in bottoms after 2.8 inches of rain fell late Wednesday night. It was the heaviest precipitation the area had seen in several years. Twelve Mile Creek, between Creston and Afton, ran over its banks and over Highway 34. The creek spread out to over a mile wide west of the McKee brothers farm. The most serious damage reported from the storm was to the high school athletic field in Creston, where much of the cinder surface of the track was washed away by the downpour and the football field was partially covered by cinders.
Bill Strobbe represented Creston High School Saturday at the State High School Speech Contest in Mt. Pleasant. He took part in the interpretive events with two readings in poetry, “Daybreak” and “Day is Done” both by Longfellow and “The Masque of the Red Death” by Poe as a prone reading. Speech instructor, Florence Bergh, accompanied Stobbe and served as one of the judges for the competition.
An Easter Egg Hunt was held at McKinley Park, sponsored by the Jr. Chamber of Commerce . It was estimated that 400 kids took part in the event.
