Extreme winds, severe storms ‘likely’ today

DES MOINES – The National Weather Service is warning of extreme winds and severe storms today. Hazards for much of Iowa include widespread high winds up to 75 miles per hour.

Damage to trees and power outages caused by downed power lines are expected. Travel for high profile vehicles such as semis and buses will be affected. Residents across the state should secure yard furniture and decor.

A fast-moving line of thunderstorms is likely with damaging winds. Storms are expected to move rapidly from the west between 4 and 8 p.m. Tornadoes are possible. Any fires that start may spread quickly. Expect blowing dust and low visibility while outdoors or driving.

The strongest winds will occur late afternoon to evening hours.
