St. Malachy, Creston’s Catholic school through eighth grade, welcomed three new staff members when its school year started Aug. 23.

Bailey Lawler is the new kindergarten teacher. She is from Independence and a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in elementary education. She enjoys reading, Netflix and crafts.

Steve Birchard the school’s middle school science teacher. He retired last school year after being in the Creston public school district 29 years as a teacher and coach. He first came to Creston as a baseball player at Southwestern Community College in 1981 and returned as a teacher and coach at Creston Community High School in 1992.

Physical education teacher Mike McCabe also retired from Creston last year as physical education teacher. He had been at Creston since 1990. McCabe taught high school science for 18 years until he began teaching at the middle school. He was also head girls basketball coach, softball coach and girls volleyball coach during those 30 years.
