Season-bests abound for Wolverines at Earlham

Weston and Eisbach lead girls, Warner leads boys

Wolverine senior Eli Harris reaches for the baton from junior Kevin Steele in a relay at the Earlham track meet Tuesday, April 15.

Senior Maddie Weston and junior Izzy Eisbach each picked up a trio of personal best times in events at Nodaway Valley’s appearance in the Earlham co-ed track meet Tuesday, April 15. The boys were led in the same meet by senior Trent Warner’s win in the shot put.

As a team, the girls were 10th with 34 points. Van Meter won the girls 11-team race with a score of 140. The boys took sixth place with 47 points as Clarinda earned the team championship with 127.

Girls

Weston set season-best times in the 100-meter and 200m dashes. She was second in the 100 in 13.13 and third in the 200 in 27.73. Eisbach placed fourth (2:34.74) in the 800 and sixth in the 1,500 (5:24.71) and both were season bests.

Also turning in season bests were Allie Cornelison and Jazz Christensen. Cornelison was 11th in the 100 (14.18) and Christensen 13th in the 1,500 (6:17.52).

The only relay the purple-and-black had was the distance medley. A quartet of Haisley Zouebek, Kaylee Moser, Christensen and Ava Herrick placed 10th in 5:34.07 in the race.

Nodaway Valley's Jazz Christensen waits for the starting gun in the 3,000-meter run at the recent Earlham track meet April 15.

Boys

Ten season bests helped the boys team tremendously as they ran in Earlham.

Warner’s shot put went 50 feet, 11.25 inches. He was also third in discus.

Distance runner Gabe Winkelmann was third in the 1,600 (4:48.32) and the 3,200 (10:38.22).

NV’s top relay finish went to its distance medley, comprised of Keyin Steeve, Eli Harris, Titan Foster and Luke Kading (3:59.91). The sprint medley took seventh with Cassius Burnside, Steeve, Foster and Harris crossing the finish line in 1:45.47.

Season bests were collected by Logan Stanton in the long jump, the sprint medley, Paul Kading in the 800m run, Harris and Foster in the 400m hurdles, Winkelmann and Kading in the mile, the 4x100m relay of Stanton, Micah Cronk, Trevyn Colton and Kaden Stonehocker, and the 4x400m relay of Steeve, Foster, Paul Kading and Harris.

The spring season is quickly pointing toward the Pride of Iowa Conference meet Monday, May 5, which is hosted this year by Nodaway Valley. Several events are poised to do well for NV.

Warner has the top distance in shot put and is second in discus. The boys hold the top two spots, with Winkelmann and Luke Kading, in the mile. Winkelmann is also top dog right now in the 3,200 and is sixth-best in the 800m.

Relays that are top-5 in the conference right now include the 4x800, distance medley and 4x400.

Warner competes in Guthrie Center

In a weather-shortened meet last Thursday at Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center High School, Nodaway Valley senior Trent Warner came up big with two event first-place finishes. He was the only Wolverine to compete at the meet as the senior was hoping to use the meet for one last shot at qualifying for the Drake Relays this week in Des Moines.

Warner won the shot put and the discus events at the Charger Relays. He tossed a season-best distance in the shot put with a winning throw of 53-feet, 4-inches. In the discus, Warner turned in his second-best distance of the season with a winning throw of 147-feet, 1-inch to win the event.

Warner’s shot put distance put him in the 25th position of all throwers in the state for any class, and the Drake Relays take the top 24. Warner’s best distance was the one thrown at AC/GC, but was 1.5 inches short of the thrower in 24th. Warner is currently the leader in the shot put in the Pride of Iowa Conference and has the second-best distance in the discus in the POI. In Class 1A, Warner is second behind Coon Rapids-Bayard’s Cal Heydon. Warner is currently fifth in the discus in Class 1A.
