County Auditor: ‘Don’t ignore recent voter mailer’

Recent process is to ‘clean up’ voter rolls

Mandy Berg

Adair County Auditor Mandy Berg and Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate are asking voters for help and not ignoring a mailer they may have received recently about elections.

Voters here may have received notices from Pate’s office either as part of the National Change of Address process or a “no activity” notice.

The NCOA process mailer went to voters who filed a change of address with the U.S. Postal Service and may need to update their voter registration.

Voters who did not vote in the 2024 General Election may receive a voter activity mailer because it may have reverted them to “inactive” status. This mailer will confirm their current address and by responding to this mailer, a voter can reactive their activity status. Voters who are inactive can also return to active status by requesting an absentee ballot, voting in a future election, submitting a new registration or updating their voter registration.

“We usually get a few questions about these every time they send them out. It’s mostly people asking what do we do with this,” Berg said. “It’s mainly just a process we use to keep our voting records clean. If you have an inactive status, we just want to know if you still need to be registered or you need to be taken off our list. It verifies who the person is, their current address and if they would still like to be registered even though they have not voted.”

It’s important to send the mailer back with a signature even if all the information on the card is accurate. Berg said there is also the possibility that someone will receive a mailer addressed to someone no longer living at that address and it is just as important that those are returned also so elections officials know.

“Sometimes people update their address for their whole family and that’s not necessarily true either. This just helps us keep our records cleaner,” Berg said. “It helps make sure voters’ records are accurate and helps our office so that when someone comes into our office to vote, or to the polling place, there’s no problem for them to vote.”
