Winning four individual events, Nodaway Valley boys track team found a solid start to its season, placing fourth out of 11 scoring teams in a meet Tuesday, April 1 at Bedford. Orient-Macksburg was also at the meet.
The Wolverines scored 64 team points, getting gold medal performances in the shot put, 1600 meters, 3200 meters and 4x800-meter relay.
NV added to that four top-5 finishes and a handful of other top-10 finishes.
Two of Nodaway Valley’s event wins came from distance runner Gabe Winkelmann. He is the reigning 2024 conference cross country champion and picked up where he left off in distance running, winning the 1600 in 5:07.16 and the 3200 in 10:36.99. These two teams put him as the leader in the Pride of Iowa through the opening week of outdoor competition. His 3200 time was good enough to set a new meet record at Bedford.
Also setting a new meet record was senior thrower Trent Warner in the shot put. He had a winning throw of 49-08, which is a new personal best for him. Warner’s throw is the second-best among POI competitiors right now and is second in all of Class 1A behind EAst Union’s Morgan Cooley.
The Wolverines’ last event win was from their 4x800-meter relay team of Haden Colton, Paul Kading, Luke Kading, and Eli Harris, which won in a time of 9:29.59. That time is currently second in the POI behind a relay team from Lenox.
In top-5 finishes, Ashton Honnold was fourth in shot put with a best throw of 40-02 3/4. He also placed seventh in the discus. Warner added a fifth-place finish in the discus with a best throw of 141-04. That discus distance is currently the second best in the POI.
In other relay events, the Wolverines placed fourth in the sprint medley with a team of Steeve, Honnold, Caleb Christensen and Titan Foster in 1:47.43. The Wolverines had two other top-10 relay finishes with a sixth-place 4x200 and a seventh-place distance medley.
Collecting top-10 finishes for the Wolverines were Cherubim Mercado in the 3,200, Luke Kading in the 1,600, Luke Kading in the 800, Eli Harris in the 400 hurdles, Cassius Burnside in the 200 and Steeve in the 110-meter high hurdles.
Highest finishes for the Orient-Macksburg boys came from Mason Payne, who posted 14th place finishes in the 100 and 200. He was 17th in long jump and 30th in discus.
Andreas Pierce was 15th in the 100 and 24th in shot put. Blaise Fry turned in an 18th place finish in long jump and was 22nd and 25th in the 100 and 200, respectively.
The meet in Bedford was moved up to 4 p.m. due to weather that hampered the meet with cold and windy conditions later on. Lenox took home the team title as the only team scoring greater than 100 points, at 118. Griswold was second (99) and Bedford third (95).
Nodaway Valley’s home meet Monday was canceled due to cold temperatures.
