Greenfield council moves on two ordinances

One was up for third reading at March 11 meeting

Greenfield News

The Greenfield City Council held readings during its Tuesday, Feb. 25 meeting on two ordinances that are in progress.

The first action was the second reading that amends an ordinance covering use of streets and maintenance. It is aimed at deterring contractors who dig and fail to return the area to how they found it. According to city officials, there have been contractors from out of town who have done work post-tornado and not replaced rock where it was disturbed because of their work.

The amended ordinance reads that streets, sidewalks, alleys and other public property disturbed during the course of work shall be restored to the condition of the property before work started. The permit holder or property owner is responsible for trenching, back-filling and pavement repairs to any right-of-way disturbed and is responsible for settlement for a period of one year after work is done.

The other ordinance places stop signs for east and westbound traffic at the corner of East Iowa and NE 2nd Street, in front of Hotel Greenfield, making it a four-way intersection. The intersection has been identified by the public and city officials as being dangerous due to limited visibility.

The city property maintenance amendment goes into effect upon its third reading. The stop sign amendment turns that intersection into a four-way stop once the public notice has been published and the stop signs are installed.
