BOYS HOOPS: Defense leads to offense for CR-B in win over Nodaway Valley

Loss ends boys' season

Nodaway Valley/OM Wolverines

Points were hard to come by for the Nodaway Valley Wolverines in a season-ending district boys basketball loss at 1A No. 7 Coon Rapids-Bayard Monday, Feb. 17.

With an 81-29 win by the Crusaders, the Wolverines finish the season 4-20 in head coach Mick Long’s first season. A first round win over Diagonal Feb. 14 propeled the Wolverines into the game against CR-B.

The first half yielded the best scoring for the Wolverines as it is where they scored 24 of their 29 points for the game. The Crusaders led 21-8 following the first quarter and 46-24 at halftime, after the Wolverines were able to chip a little bit into the lead. A 24-0 run by Coon Rapids-Bayard in the third quarter was too much for Nodaway Valley to bounce back from.

CR-B proved to be very good defensive, which led into its offensive output.

Sophomore guard Ty Rardin led the Wolverines with 12 points, which included four 3-pointers. Parker Schneider and Paul Berg were next with six points each. Berg made his points on two long-range shots.

Pacing the Crusaders on the scoreboard were Cal Heydon with 25 points, Bryce Lewis with 18, Ty Heydon with 17 points adn Caden Oswald with 12. Ty Heydon had a double double with 10 rebounds.

The Wolverines say goodbye to four seniors from this year’s team. Graduating will be seniors Ben Hoover, Garrett Welsch, Paul Berg and Christian Putney.
