NV girls fall short to Cardinals as Eisbach tops 1,500 points

Nodaway Valley junior Izzy Eisbach (middle) with her teammates and coaches after topping 1,500 points in a game recently against Central Decatur.

Nodaway Valley’s girls basketball team earned a win over East Union and came up short against Central Decatur last week.

The Wolverines wrapped up the regular season with that and finish 8-14. They turn their attention to a regional tournament game Tuesday, Feb. 18 at Class 2A No. 11 Shenandoah’s home gym.

The win over East Union secured the Wolverines a sweep over the Eagles, and it came with a 69-21 final tally last Tuesday, Feb. 4. The win snapped a two-game losing streak.

Junior guard Izzy Eisbach led the Wolverines with 30 points while Mylee Comstock posted 13 and Maddie Weston 11. Eisbach’s night was a double double as she also had 14 rebounds, eight steals and six assists. Day had eight rebounds and Comstock six. East Union’s Kaylie Shade scored 13.

Central Decatur’s 65-64 overtime win was the first for the Cardinals against a Wolverine team since 2019. A long list of talented players like Maddax DeVault, Lindsey Davis, and now Eisbach, had kept the Cardinals from winning until now.

The game’s closing sequence included a steal from Makenna Perkins. The Wolverines had the ball with 13 seconds left and down by one point. The steal meant Perkins could dribble out the ball for her team’s win.

Eisbach scored a game-high 40 points in the loss to go with nine rebounds and five assists. Weston scored 12.

Central Decatur out-rebounded NV 50-30. A trio of Cardinals were double-digit scorers in Perkins' 15 points and Soiyer Smith’s 17. Both players had double doubles with Perkins securing a dozen rebounds and Smith 10. Leading the Cardinals was Breegan Lindsey with 18 points.

Nodaway Valley seemed to be in control after the first quarter, leading 18-11 going to the second. CD rallied, trimming three points off the NV lead by halftime and three more points by the end of the third quarter, trailing 47-46.

The game was tied 60-60 after the fourth as Nodaway Valley’s Liv Laughery made a basket that sent the game to overtime. The Cardinals outscored the Wolverines 5-4 in overtime to secure the win.
