Finally, the hard work has a win to show for it for the Nodaway Valley boys basketball team.
The Wolverines picked up a dominant 75-57 win in front of the home crowd to begin a grueling four-game week Monday, Jan. 13.
The win set the Wolverines' record at 1-10 overall and moved them out of a tie for the eighth place spot in the Pride of Iowa Conference. The Wolverines still have a Feb. 4 date left in Afton to play East Union again.
“It was a lot of fun (getting the first win). We played hard and I want us to play that way from now on,” said Nodaway Valley head coach Mick Long. “The guys respodned well to waht we wanted to do in the game, and I am happy for them and I hope it is the first of many more this season.”
NV took a 15-8 lead after the first quarter and led by 10 at halftime, 32-22. The Wolverines buried the Eagles in the third quarter, utilizing a 23-12 run that pushed them out in front, 55-34, heading to the fourth quarter.
Nodaway Valley got a career high 26 points from sophomore Ty Rardin in the game to lead NV scorers. Rardin hit 6-for-9 3-pointers. Paul Berg scored 10 points and Titan Foster nine. Parker Schneider scored nine points while Jack Berg had seven and Ben Hoover five.
The Wolverines traveled to play the POI-leading Mount Ayr Raiders Tuesday, Jan. 14, and fell 72-25. It was the Raiders' second game against the Wolverines this season. Ben Hoover led all Wolverines with nine points. Paul Berg had a team-high nine rebounds and Hoover had eight.
Jackson Ruggles scored 15 for the Raiders with Tyler Martin and Tate Dugan scoring 13 and 11, respectively, for Mount Ayr.
The Wolverines lost to Panorama Thursday, Jan. 16. Panorama jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter, but Nodaway Valley stormed back with a 15-6 run to trail 22-19 at the half. A big finish pushed the Panthers to the eventual win. Hoover scored 14 and Paul Berg 10 for Nodaway Valley.
Wayne beat NV 73-54 Friday in Corydon. The Wolverines led 9-8 after the first quarter over the Falcons, but trailed 26-24 at halftime. The Falcons came out after halftime out-scoring the Wolverines 23-14 in the third quarter, part of a 47-30 second half.
Hoover led Nodaway Valley scorers with 15 points while Titus Hamer and Ty Radin each had nine.
