The Adair County Board of Supervisors organized for 2025 in a meeting Thursday, Jan. 2 at the courthouse.
During that meeting, Nathan Baier was chosen as chairman for the year and Jerry Walker vice-chairman. Walker was chairman for 2024.
“I’m starting in on my third year and every year has had some interesting challenges,” Baier told the Adair County Free Press. “I’m sure being chairman will bring some new things to work through.”
Baier said House File 718, passed by the Iowa Legislature in 2023 to change the property tax process in Iowa, is one hurdle county supervisors will have to continue to maneuver through.
“With House File 718, we will have to work through that for the next few years, and it is quite the moving target to have to hit when doing budgets,” Baier explained. “Hopefully we will also be able to finalize most or all of the tornado recovery business in the upcoming year.”
The new chairman thanked John Twombly for his 16 years of service, which ended at the close of 2024.
“I’m sure I’m speaking for the whole board when I say we’ll miss his wit that he brought to the meetings,” Baier said. “With Michael Christoffersen filling the seat, I’m sure he will bring some ideas and different perspectives to things we’ll need to work through.”
The supervisors will continue to meet 9 a.m. each Wednesday, unless otherwise noted. The supervisors also set various board and commission appointments during last week’s meeting.
