COLLEGE HOOPS: DeVault, Davis tip off seasons

Former Nodaway Valley standout basketball players Maddax DeVault and Lindsey Davis are eager to see what their teams can accomplish this season in college.

DeVault recently began her junior season as a member of the Simpson Storm women’s basketball team.

DeVault, a 5-6 guard on the Storm who graduated from Nodaway Valley in 2022, was one of four Simpson players to score in double figures in a 101-89 loss at Wisconsin-LaCrosse. The loss was the first for the Storm this season. DeVault had 15 points, two rebounds and made 4-of-6 three-pointers in the game in 16 minutes.

Simpson opens American Rivers Conference play 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26 when they host Central College. Other home games before Christmas Break for Simpson are Saturday, Dec. 7 against Dubuque and Saturday, Dec. 14 against Faith Baptist Bible College. The first game after the holiday break is at home Saturday, Jan. 4 against Wartburg College.

DeVault is a two-time letter winner for the Storm in her first two years. She was also selected the the All-ARC Academic Team for the 2023-24 season.

In her sophomore season, DeVault scored 135 points and shot 46.9% from the field. She had 25 steals, 20 assists, and 16 rebounds and shot 60% from the free-throw line.

DeVault is majoring in health and exercise science with minors in coaching and biology. She is the daughter of Ryan and Amy DeVault.

Davis starts freshman season with Peacocks

The 2024-25 Upper Iowa women’s basketball schedule gets underway this week. The season opener is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14 when the Peacocks travel to Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Upper Iowa will open their home schedule 5 p.m. Saturday when they host Northland College (Ashland, Wisconsin). Upper Iowa’s first Great Lakes Valley Conference game is at home Monday, Dec. 2 when they host Quincy University.

Davis is a freshman guard on the Peacocks team. The 5-foot-7 shooter is the daughter of David and Tisha Davis.

The Great Lakes Valley Conference is an NCAA Division 2 league made up of 15 schools from across the midwest.

The Peacocks are coached by head coach Justin Maass and assistant coaches Bridgette Griffin and Mackenzie Kielty. Last season the Peacocks were 15-13 overall and had a record of 11-11 in the GLVC. It was the most overall wins for the program since the 2001-02 season. The Peacocks advanced to the GLVC tournament semifinals before seeing their season end.
