NV girls reach culmination of cross country season

The Nodaway Valley volleyball team had a long road trip for their Class 1A, Region 8 match at Sidney Monday, October 21.

The trip was nearly two hours, and once there, Nodaway Valley faced a 24-win Cowgirl team that started the season 1-3 but finished 23-6 over their final 30 matches.

The Wolverines got off to a rough start, falling 25-8 in the first set to trail 1-0 in the match. The Wolverines nearly doubled their point total in the second but fell 25-15 to fall behind 2-0 in the match. The Cowgirls closed out the match in the third set, winning 25-5 to claim the sweep.

The Wolverines had 70 attacks in the match with 12 kills. Bailey Carstens led with 33 of those attacks and eight kills. Izzy Eisbach and Taylor Laughery each had 12 attacks and combined for three kills. Adelaide Livingston had 10 assists and nine digs and Liv Laughery led in digs with 11. Eisbach also had eight digs in the match. As a team, Nodaway Valley served 25-for-29 with one ace. Allie Corneilson led the serving, going 8-for-9.

Sidney had 77 attacks in the match and 25 kills. Seniors Addy Haning and Ava Osborn led with 17 attacks each with seven and four kills respectively. Addyson Foster led in assists with 19. Foster led the Corner Conference in assists this year.

The Cowgirls had 38 digs led by Gabi Jacobs with seven and Alyssa Melvin with five. Jacobs was the leader in digs in the conference. Sidney served 74-for-75 with 12 aces, paced by Abby Haning, who served 21-for-21 with six aces, Addyson Foster, who served 19-for-19 with two aces.

Later in the week, the Cowgirls played Griswold in the regional quarterfinals. They swept the Tigers, moving into a regional semifinal that was Monday in Sidney against Fremont-Mills (26-10). The two teams have played, with Sidney sweeping the Knights earlier this season.

Both in Class 1A action, Southeast Warren and Southwest Valley are the two remaining Pride of Iowa Conference teams going in the postseason. Southeast Warren played at MOrmon Trail and Southwest Valley at Stanton in the semifinals of their respective regions on Monday.

The Sidney Cowgirls won the Corner Conference title this year with a 6-1 record.The Corner Conference welcomed former POI member Bedford this year, where they placed sixth in the eight-team league.

The Wolverines graduate three seniors off the team this year in Bailey Carstens, Liv Laughery and KayLynn Virtue.
