School off to a strong start at Nodaway Valley

White walls in the Nodaway Valley High School commons have replaced accents of various colors that were there before. The fresh coat of paint is part of a multi-faceted construction project that happened over the summer in the building.

Superintendent Paul Croghan reports school is off to a good start at Nodaway Valley.

The construction project to replace roofing and heating and cooling systems on a portion of the high school should reach substantial completion this week, Croghan said in a follow up interview after last Wednesday, Sept. 11′s school board meeting.

All of the project has been done, except for security entrance work that was removed from the project because a grant to pay for that part of the project hasn’t been obtained yet.

The commons was painted and new vent hoods were installed in the family and consumer science classroom. A separate initiative over the summer gave the gymnasium a new look.

Croghan said next are the punch list items, where straggling items in the project are shored up, then the work will be complete. A pay application for the project was passed by the board.

“It’s down to electricians doing thir thing, and a few damaged lights that need replaced. There’s just little things,” Croghan said.

It will be nice for the gymnasium to be air-conditioned for the volleyball season, he said.

“It came in good timing,” Croghan said of the project. “They did a nice job of working around the kids these first two weeks.”

To have students and staff back in the buildings for class is a good feeling, the superintendent said. Enrollment data isn’t known yet. The first priority has been getting everyone back in their routine.

“I don’t have any big concerns right now,” Croghan said of enrollment. “I don’t think we’ll have a big loss like we thought we might at the beginning of the summer. We appreciate all those efforts that were made to get kids back in our buildings.”

The board passed three sharing agreements with other districts. The first is for Nodaway Valley staff member Kaitlynn Geidel to provide library consultation services to Cumberland-Anita-Massena, East Union and Murry. The second is for secondary school counselor Brittany Baier to assist with several services for Orient-Macksburg students. The last is for accounts payable work done for Orient-Macksburg by Nodaway Valley staff member Sue McMorran.

Board members also authorized an out-of-state trip for the FFA chapter to attend national convention in Indianapolis and a series of board policies were reviewed.
