City of Greenfield will hear zoning requests after plan, map are updated

The Greenfield City Council will wait to take requests for zoning changes from property owners until an upcoming comprehensive plan and zoning map update are completed.

The city recently signed on with MSA Professional Services, Inc. to do the work of updating their current 2003 comprehensive plan, which is seen as an integral long-term planning tool to help guide leaders in decision-making for the future.

The question came up as Luke Daughenbaugh requested zoning on a property on East Iowa Street be changed from a commercial designation to residential because of plans he has for the property.

The council discussed pros and cons of allowing the change now, allowing residents to have a say in zoning on individual properties through the process, or taking requests after the process is complete. Completion of the comprehensive plan and zoning map is projected for April of next year.

Throughout the comprehensive plan and zoning map update process, there will be periodic instances where the public will be welcome to give their input.

The council also granted street closures for the Nodaway Valley Homecoming Parade, after hearing a request from senior student Maddie Weston and Student Council Sponsor Teresa Larson. They passed the urban renewal plan for 2023-24, approved payment for Nodaway Lake playground equipment by the Greater Greenfield Community Foundation, swore in Jacob Tootle as a new police officer, passed a CDBG opportunities and threats funding request and discussed possibilities for the upcoming process of rebuilding a fire station for the community.
