Nodaway Valley girls come up empty in Colfax

Nodaway Valley senior Bailey Carstens (2) hits the ball back over the net against an opponent in the Colfax-Mingo tournament Saturday. The Wolverines went 0-4 on the day but picked up valuable early-season experience against teams from other parts of the state.

The Nodaway Valley Wolverines made the trek to Jasper County last Saturday to take part in the Colfax-Mingo volleyball invitational. Nodaway Valley got four matches in at the eight-team event, which was their first official action of the 2024 season.

The Wolverines had a tough day at the tournament, going 0-4 in matches. The Wolverines fell to Iowa Valley, East Marshall, Green Mountain-Garwin (GMG) and Murray. It was the first time in the modern Bound era that the Wolverines had played three of these schools.

The Wolverines fell in their season-opening match 2-0 to GMG. The GMG Wolverines won the first set 21-8 while Nodway Valley played better in the second set before falling 21-16. GMG came into the season off of three straight double-digit winning seasons including a 16-win season a year ago. That stretch is the best in the program since at least the 2007 season.

East Marshall played in their fifth match of the season when NV played the Mustangs. It was just the second match for the Wolverines this season. East Marshall won the first set 21-6 and took a close second set 21-17 to win the match 2-0. The Mustangs were 3-3 after the week and are halfway to their win total from last year at 6-29.

Iowa Valley beat Nodaway Valley after NV got out to a decent start but fell 21-13 in the opening set. The Tigers claimed the match with a 21-9 second set win. The Tigers are trying to rebound after a down year last season where they won less than 10 matches (7-26) for just the second time since 2007.

The Wolverines’ other match was against Murray, however set scores were unavailable for that match before press time.

The Wolverines were in action Tuesday, Sept. 3 at AHSTW and two nights later on Thursday, Sept. 5 at ACGC. The Wolverines are set to host a POI triangular meet Tuesday, Sept. 10 when Wayne and Lenox are in town.
