Event Briefs for week of Wednesday, Aug. 21

Aviation Museum Fly-In this Saturday

The Iowa Aviation Museum, located at the Greenfield Airport, is hosting the Wings Fly-In/Drive-In 7:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24.

There will be a pancake breakfast served by Fontanelle Lions Club. Pilots in command and preschoolers eat free, adults are $10 and students first through 12th grade are $5.

Price of breakfast includes museum admission.

Pumpkin Days Friday and Saturday

Pumpkin Days in Orient is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23-24.

Highlights of the Friday part of the schedule include a 5K or 1-mile run at 6 p.m. The Orient-Macksburg FFA chapter will have a bags tournament at the slab at 7 p.m. Steven Bankey and the Flatland Band will play from 7-10 p.m.

Saturday morning begins with the Orient Volunteer Fire Department serving breakfast starting at 7 a.m. The Orient Women’s Club will have their volleyball tournament and a vendor fair will happen uptown. The chicken noodle dinner commences at 11 a.m. at the Orient Plymouth Congregational Church.

In the afternoon is a dunk tank, car show and shine, youth pedal pull and cow pie bingo. Winners of the pedal pull get a new bike.

The parade starts at 4 p.m., traveling along W Everett Street, Poplar Street, 1st Street and Sprague Street, starting at Agriland FS and ending at the corner of Sprague and E Division Street. A baked goods auction will follow the parade, as will a barbecue dinner at the Orient United Methodist Church, a beer garden and a performance by Michael Shaun Brown from 8 p.m. to midnight. At about 9 p.m. Top Notch Fireworks will help cap the festival with a fireworks show.

There will be a carnival throughout the festival with advance tickets that are now available.

Circus coming to Greenfield Aug. 24

Thanks to the sponsorship of the Adair County Fair, the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus is coming to Greenfield 2 and 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Adair County Fairgrounds.

C&M Circus has been providing quality, local family entertainment for 38 years. This authentic, one-ring big top circus has been featured on the A&E special “Under the Big Top, Nick News: On the Road with Circus Kids” and most recently OETA’s Big Top Town. This year, we’re very excited to bring you our brand new 2024 performance featuring Big Cats presented by Trey Key, our aerialist extraordinaire Simone on the trapeze, 10th generation Loyal Bareback Horse Riders, the Perez Daredevil Duo on the Tight Rope and Wheel of Destiny, Elizabeth Ayala’s incredible foot juggling and hair hang and everyone’s favorite Circus Clown Leo Acton.

The circus day schedule will include a tent-raising and tour at 9:30 a.m. where everybody is invited to watch the Big Top rise. You’ll also get a chance to tour the grounds and get a behind-the-scenes look at the show. Learn about life on the road and care the animals receive.

At 1 p.m. the midway opens, including pony rides, moon bounce, giant slide, face painting, concessions and the box office opens.

Advance tickets are $13 for adults and $8 for children 2-12 or seniors at FNB Bank in Greenfield and Fontanelle, Union State Bank in Greenfield and Farmers and Merchants Bank in Orient. Box office prices are $16 for adults and $9 for children 2-12 or seniors. Shows last about 90 minutes.

Self-Care and Disasters sessions this Sunday

Adair County ISU Extension and Outreach is sponsoring three opportunities for the public to participate in their “Self-Care and Disasters” workshop Sunday, Aug. 25. Attendance is free and each workshop lasts about an hour.

Options are 12:30 p.m. at Greenfield United Methodist Church or 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Hotel Greenfield.

Chad Elliot Aug. 25 at The Wallace Farm

Singer/songwriter/artist Chad Elliott of Jefferson will be performing a free concert at the Wallace Farm on Sunday, August 25, starting at 6 p.m. (Tips will be collected.) The Wallace Farm is located at 2773 290th Street, Orient.

The concert is part of Chad’s “Paint the Park” art + music project held this summer at parks and natural spaces across Iowa. Earlier in the day, Chad will set up his easel on the grounds and create a plain air painting. The public is invited to watch him work and ask questions until about an hour before the concert start time. More information about Chad’s Paint the Park series can be found at www.chadelliott.net.

Concert goers can pre-order a picnic supper that includes a sandwich of turkey, smoked gouda and apple butter on artisan bread, green garden salad with red wine herbal vinaigrette and carrot cake with cream cheese frosting to pick up from 4 to 6 pm. Tickets for the picnic supper can be purchased online at www.wallace.org or by calling the Wallace Farm at 641-337-5019.

Ala carte drinks will be available to purchase before the show. Reusable water bottles are welcome, but no other outside food or drink. Bring your lawn chairs as seating is limited. The gift shop will be open.

Hunter Education this September

A Hunter Education course is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12 and Saturday, Sept. 14 at Greenfield Public Library at Mormon Trail Lake.

Hunter education is a mandatory program that is designed to introduce students to several life-long skills that are important to many different types of outdoor recreational opportunities. The course teaches students basic survival and first aid skills, water safety, wildlife identification, the basics of wildlife management, hunting laws and firearm/archery safety. Hunter education also stresses the importance of individual responsibility and outdoor ethics.

Iowa law requires that anyone born after January 1, 1972 must be certified in hunter education before they are eligible to purchase an Iowa hunting license.
