Greenfield class observes 70th class reunion

Class reunions happen all the time, but it’s rare that a class is able to get together to celebrate their 70th class reunion. It’s a milestone worth celebrating, for sure.

Arlene Weinheimer Schwartz of Greenfield reports that four members of the original 42 members of the Greenfield High School Class of 1952 recently gathered to reminisce and share a meal at Hotel Greenfield.

“I’m not going to brag, but I was class president, and I have actually helped or planned all of our class reunions,” Schwartz said. “I’ve had some help, but normally it was me and a few other people who were local.”

Schwartz remembers two distinct groups of kids when she was in high school, with town kids and farm kids. All of the farm kids attended country school, then they came to town for high school. Schwartz was a farm kid.

“Back then, we didn’t really have girls competitive sports,” Schwartz said. “I wasn’t a cheerleader or anything like that, but we did have Y-teens, which was a club we had that I was involved with. My husband [the late Carl Schwartz] was also in that class, and we started going together when we were sophomores.”

Schwartz remembers her class integrating well in high school, whether they were town kids or farm kids.

Through the years, the class had many fun gatherings to reunite. She particularly remembers their 50th class reunion in 2002, which was held at the congregate meal site at the Adair County Health and Fitness Center.

Of the entire class, Schwartz believes 16 members of the class are still living.

“I really kept track of most all of them. There was one gal who a letter was returned from a few years ago. I have lost track of her, she probably passed away,” Schwartz said. “Otherwise, I’ve kept track of them all throughout the years.”
