Wilma “Pat” Smith, 91, of Afton, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2020, at Crest Haven Care Centre in Creston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Afton. Fr. Adam Westphal will officiate.
The Mass will be livestreamed on Powers Funeral Home Facebook page. Burial will be in St. Edward’s Catholic Cemetery west of Afton. Open visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Social distancing will be observed and family strongly recommends masks.

Wilma Irene “Pat” (Cook) Smith, was born Dec. 13, 1928, in Ringgold County to Myrtle Irene (Blauer) Cook and James Wavel Cook. Pat graduated from Thayer High School in 1947 and continued her education at the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
On Dec. 30, 1948, Pat married Michael E. Smith at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Afton. They settled on a farm north of Afton, where she worked as an active farm wife and mother for 60 years. She also worked as a nurses’ aide for sixteen years beginning in 1976.
Next Pat worked for the Community Adult Residential Environment C.A.R.E. as a certified medical aide for 12 years, retiring in 2007. In 2010, Pat moved off the farm and into Afton where she continued to be an active member of St. Edward Catholic Church, St. Edward Altar Society and Rosary Society. Pat was also involved with the Sunshine Society and in earlier years as a Cub Scout leader.
Pat is survived by three sons: Dennis (Janet) Smith, Jim (Dawn) Smith and Terry (Lisa) Smith, all of Afton; two daughters: Mary Ann (Dan) Simington of Pella and Nancy (Tim) Allen of New Market; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a brother Jim (Donella) Cook of Creston; a sister-in-law Iris Smith of Creston and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Michael in 2000, a daughter-in-law Diane Smith, a sister Marie Judah, a brother Dick (Marilyn) Cook, two brothers-in-law Gerald Smith and Ed Smith and a sister-in-law Ann (Carl) Ford.
